In a two and a half hour marathon match, Cucine Lube Civitanova takes a five-setter over Diatec Trentino to go up 2-0 in the finals series of the Italian men’s Serie A1 championships.

Lube fought through many extra points in the match to earn the victory 3-2, (33-31, 22-25, 26-24, 28-30, 15-7) in front of 3,974 fans. All sets but the fifth took over 30 minutes to complete, with the fourth coming in at a 38 minute finish time.

The first set was a battle for both squads as the score went far beyond the 25 points needed for the victory. The second set slipped away from them, as Diatec tied up the match 1-1 with a 25-22 win. Lube took the 2-1 match advantage with a 26-24 second set win, but Diatec responded right back with another extra point set to send the match into a fifth and deciding set.

The final set was a blowout, with Lube coming out on top easily 15-7, making it a 2-0 series lead.

The MVP of the match went to Lube’s Juantorena who put down 25 points in the match.

Lube only needs one more win to take the Serie A1 title, with the third match to be played on May 7.
