The transition from indoor volleyball to beach volleyball is a lot more difficult than one would think it to be. The rules are, for the most part, the same, however, the technique, environment and, of course, the number of players on the court differentiate significantly.
Former German national team member, Maggie Kozuch made the switch from indoor to beach volleyball this season. Kozuch partnered up with Karla Borger for the season, and they have been consistently getting better and better as the year progresses.
The duo started their season with the Fort Lauderdale Major, a five-star event on the FIVB World Tour. There they finished in 17th place, a satisfying finish for the pair. In their next World Tour event, the pair took ninth at Xiamen, followed by a fifth place finish at Moscow. At the Porec Major just last week, the two did not partner up together, but Kozuch competed with Laura Ludwig to which they finished with a ninth place finish.
“You have a lot more responsibility but also a lot more freedom in beach volleyball,” said Kozuch.
Along with getting used to the style of play, Kozuch talks about how both her and Borger like to cheer when they score a point. With indoor volleyball there are six players on the court, so you don’t always know who the loudest one to cheer was, but with beach, it’s just the two players – therefore, everyone knows who is the loudest.
