Marquette’s Barber Earns Third Big East Player Of The Week Nod

Week two of BIG EAST volleyball is in the books and with it three teams went undefeated in league action, Creighton (2-0), Marquette (2-0) and Villanova (2-0). Marquette’s dominance was led by this week’s Offensive Player of the Week Allie Barber with more than six points per set. Golden Eagle Hope Werch was named Freshman of the Week for her double-double performance in a Xavier victory. Creighton’s Marysa Wilkinson was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week after leading the league in blocks (1.67 per set).

BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Allie Barber, Marquette, So., OH (Cedarburg, Wis. )

Marquette sophomore outside hitter Allie Barber earns her third BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week nod of the year after averaging a league-best 6.21 points and 6.14 kills per set last week in wins against Xavier (3-1) and DePaul (3-0).  Barber hit .459 percent for the week, third-highest in the league as she had just four errors in 85 swings with 43 kills. In the sweep of DePaul, Barber hit a career-high .594 with just one error in 32 swings. Barber’s 23 kills against Xavier tied a match high for the year in the league for four-set matches. Her 20 kills against DePaul was a match high for the year in the BIG EAST for three-set matches. Barber’s average for the year in kills is 4.75, a league-best. She also leads the league in points per set (5.09).

BIG EAST Defensive Player  of the Week
Marysa Wilkinson, Creighton, Sr., MB (Lincoln, Neb.)

Creighton’s Marysa Wilkinson earned her second BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week nods with a league-leading 1.67 blocks per set to help the then-No. 14 Bluejays to a 2-0 weekend against Seton Hall (3-0) and St. John’s (3-0). Wilkinson’s 10 blocks were twice as many as Creighton’s opponents, combined, on the weekend. Eight of her blocks came against St. John’s. In addition to her excellence at the net, Wilkinson added 3.17 kills per set behind .444 hitting. She accounted for 4.00 points per set.

BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Hope Werch, Marquette, Fr., OH (Neenah, Wis.)

Golden Eagle freshman Hope Werch averaged 3.21 points per set,  2.71 kills per set and 3.14 digs per set to rank in the top 20 in the league in all three categories last week. Additionally, she averaged 0.43 blocks per set and 0.29 assists per set and had a double-double with 10 kills, 10 digs against Xavier to help Marquette to a 3-1 win. In the straight set sweep of DePaul, Werch had a near double-double with nine kills, 12 digs.

BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Anna Logan, Butler, Jr., OH (Indianapolis, Ind.)
Logan had a double-double in two of Butler’s three matches last week posting a league match high 18 digs for the week in a three-set match. Logan hit the 1,000-kill plateau in just 71 career matches. She averaged 3.91 kills and 4.41 points per set in a 1-2 week for the Bulldogs.

Lydia Dimke, Creighton, Sr., S (Ham Lake, Minn.)
Dimke helped then-No. 14 Creighton to two road sweeps with 12.33 assists per set, second-highest in the league and a league-high .579 hitting. Dimke had 37 assists in both matches. She also averaged 2.00 kills and 1.83 digs per set.

Dominque Mason, Seton Hall, Sr., OH (Chicago, Ill.)
Mason had double-doubles in both matches, a 3-0 win over Providence and a 3-0 loss to then-No. 14 Creighton. For the week, she averaged 3.67 points, 3.67 kills per set with 4.17 digs per set.

Allie Loitz, Villanova, Sr., OH (Bonita, Calif.)
Loitz marked an impressive 6.17 points per set and 5.00 kills per set in a 2-0 week for Villanova, ranking second behind Offensive Player of the Week Barber. She also hit .355 with 1.67 digs per set and 1.17 aces per set in 3-0 sweeps of Butler and Xavier.

Meredith Klare, Xavier, R-Jr., L, Union, Ky.
Klare led the league last week in digs per set with 5.36 as she had a league match high of 29 digs for the week against Georgetown in a four-set win. Xavier went 1-2 for the week with a 3-0 loss to Villanova and a four-set loss to Marquette.
