Italian Serie A side BluVolley Calzedonia Verona has announced that after diagnostic testing, Greek outside hitter Mitar Djuric (aka Mita Tzourits) will miss 12-14 weeks with an injury.
Djuric was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzogovina, but internationally represents Greece. He was on the expanded Greek roster for this summer’s World League (they finished last), but didn’t play. This is his 2nd season with Verona, and last season he led the team to a 5th-place finish in the regular-season table and an opening-round playoff loss.
So far this season, Verona is off to a 1-1 start in the league. The one win, which took a tie-breaker, leaves them with only 2 points and 12th out of 14 teams in Serie A – though most of the league has already played their 3rd round games.
Djuric played in a 1 set this season, but didn’t record any stats. Last season, he ranked 7th among outside hitters with 398 points, landing 47.5% of his shots. Without him this year, the team is still hitting efficiently – at a 50% clip – but has struggled in receptions – they rank 13th out of 14 teams with just a 23.5% perfect reception.
The club has immediately gone into the transfer market to try and find a replacement while Djuric recovers.
