After 11 uniterrupted years in Poland’s elite division, MKS Dąbrowa Górnicza was relegated from it after a very poor season that saw it finish dead last in the league, with a 3-23 record. The poor performance probably came as a shock for fans of the club, since the team did not finish worse than 5th place for the last 10 seasons, when it first debuted into Poland’s top tier league. The club finished runner up to the title in the 2012-13 season and won the Polish Cup twice (2011-12 and 2012-13).
On their farewell match, Górnicza lost 3-2 to Trefl Proximie Krakow. Once again, with tears in her eyes, it was up to the team’s setter and Polish national teamer Ewelina Tobiasz to talk to fans and try to explain what happened (Siatka.org):
“The season was not very successful neither for the staff or players. We only scored 11 standing points in 26 matches, in other words, a single drop of water, when we needed a full ocean. We are a young team and we should’ve definitely won more points, but as you can see, this youth did not go in the direction that we set for ourselves. Regardless, I would like to thank all the fans who offered us kind words and were with us to the end.
We can’t cry over spilled milk, we must accept the result of this match and the entire season. We have to fight for ourselves and our future at the moment, I hope that Dąbrowa Górnicza will soon return to the top league. The situation and circumstances in which we find ourselves are not easy for us, it is known that each of us will think about our future, about the new season. The club’s authorities are striving to ensure that volleyball in Dąbrowa Górnicza does not disappear, they will strive to rebuild this club and want to return to LSK.”
Now at 24 years old, a current fixture in the Polish national team, and a former Polish Champion, it is safe to say that Ewelina Tobiasz has a bright future ahead of her. This relegation should not damp her resume for future seasons. But, can the same be said for for Górnicza? Will we see it back playing in Poland’s elite division any time soon?
