The 2018 edition of the Hungarian National Cups crowned surprising winners for both male and female teams. On the men’s side, RC Kazincbarcika advanced to the finals of the tournament after 11 years, where it met Kecskement RC en route to a tightly contest 3-0 victory (25-21, 25-20 25-22):

On the women’s side, Nyiregyhaza, who also advanced to the finals of the tournament after 11 years, met two-time reigning champions Linamar-Bekescsabai, who narrowly (26-24) took the first set of the match. Nyiregyhaza fought back with all its might to take the next two frames, before losing the fourth set. At the tie break, deciding to put an end to its long title drought, Nyiregyhaza just had more strenght to take the set and the game 15-5 (Final score (24-26 25-15 25-16 21-25 15-5).
“It’s a fairty tale. The girls fought hard today, I can’t find words to describe it. They believed they could win this game, and they did.” Nyiregyhaza’s coach László Hollósy.
As for Montenegro’s men’s tournament, there were no new winners, as Jedinstvo Polke retained their title after an easy 3-0 victory over Bucucnost Podgorica in front of a passionate crowd of 1000+ spectators.
