- Northwestern def. Syracuse 3-2 (25-15, 20-25, 25-20, 25-10, 15-9)
- Northwestern moves to 7-4, Syracuse falls to 1-7
Once called by a Syracuse fan as the biggest “non-rivalry rivalry” in the country, the Northwestern Wildcats and Syracuse Orange, famous for producing folks in our business (sports journalism), played a wild back-and-forth 5 set match on Friday, with the Wildcats ultimately coming out on top.
The match opened in the way that one might have expected it between a 6-4 team and a 1-6 team (entering the game) – Northwestern dominated the frame 25-10 and Syracuse played a sloppy match with 8 kills and 8 errors for a .000 hitting average.
In the second set, however, Syracuse got hot and had 16 kills to just 5 errors
The scoring swung back in the third set, with a whopping 20 k ills for Northwestern, including 5 in the set for Rafae Strobos among 15 overall for the game to lead all players.
Set 4 was the most lopsided of the whole match, and momentum again swung back to Syracuse. The Orange, who cleaned up their errors after that first set, hit .409 with 12 kills and won the set by the same margin as they lost the first: 25-10. Northwestern, meanwhile, had 3 kills and 9 errors in that 4th set.
In the decisive 5th set, the Wildcats jumped on Syracuse early with a service run by Maddie Slater than made the score 11-4 at one point, before the Wildcats won 15-9.
Despite only one win this season, Syracuse’s blockers continue to be a bright spot for them this season. Amber Wittherspoon, who ranked 16th in the country at 1.52 blocks-per-set coming into the game recorded just 3 in 5 (.6/set), but she was backed up by junior teammate Leah Levert who recorded 9 (1.4/set).
Syracuse entered the day ranked 7th nationally as a team in blocks per set, though even with a few big individual efforts, that average drops with 1 solo and 24 assist blocks on Friday (2.6/set average).

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Senior outside hitter Rafae Strobos put forth a career effort Friday night to help Northwestern edge Syracuse in the second match of a doubleheader at the UNI Tournament.
Strobos recorded her second career double-double (her first came earlier in the day Friday) with a career-high 15 kills and 11 digs.
“Rafae just brings a calmness,” head coach Shane Davissaid. “Her feet are always set, and she is ready to make a play. She has a great vision for where the block is and has a lot of shots in her toolbox. She did an outstanding job for us tonight, and I am really impressed with her steadiness today.”
Northwestern (7-4) beat the Orange in five sets, with a 15-9 decision in the final frame clinching the match.
“Tonight felt good,” Strobos said. “We have been going through changes as a team, so it’s really important for everybody to just come on the court ready.”
Several other Wildcats had significant nights as well. Symone Abbott had 14 kills and a career-high 18 digs for her third double-double of the season, and Caleigh Ryan, playing in the 6-2 system, had a match-high 25 assists to go along with 11 digs.
Maddie Slater added 11 kills, while hitting .529. She once again leads the all-time hitting percentage list at Northwestern with a .319 mark.

After trading sets two and three, the Wildcats held a 2-1 lead but lost by a wide margin in the fourth to allow Syracuse to tie things up at two. The team responded with a big run to open the fifth and held it to secure the win.
“We were able to come back in set five and forget about set four and do a nice job on our side of the net,” head coach Shane Davis said. “We had 10 digs in just set five, which shows a mentality of the ball is not going to hit the floor.”
