Ohio State Has 2 Players Break Career Aces Record on the Same Day

The Ohio State men’s volleyball team had two players break the school’s record for career aces in the same game on Saturday evening.

As part of the team’s 3-1 win over 4th-ranked Long Beach State (read more here), senior Miles Johnson had 1 ace to put him into the school’s all-time career lead with 124, breaking a tie with Steve Potter who had 123 from 1992-1995. 37 minutes later, junior Nicolas Szerszen put up his 3rd ace of the game to tie Johnson’s number.

Johnson has 13 aces this season, while Szerszen has 24. While the two have the same number of aces in their careers, Szerszen has earned his in just 252 sets over 3 seasons, while Johnson has pushed through his total in 340 sets played over 4 seasons.

Both players also rank among the top 20 Buckeyes in history in career kills (another list currently led by Potter at 1,602). Johnson ended Saturday’s game with 1,044 career kills, which moved him past Mark Greaves for 12th on the all-time list. Szerszen has 954 kills, which puts him 16th. At his current pace, Szerszen is on track to blow by Potter’s career record sometime during the 2018 season.

• Christy Blough, a senior, has 3,440 career assists, which ranks him 6th on the all-time career list. 572 more would move him past Steven Kehoe for 5th place.
• Senior Gabriel Domecus has 682 career digs, which ranks him 5th on the team’s all-time career rankings. He only needs 61 more to move into 2nd, though Mik Berzins’ 902 might be out of reach.
• Senior Driss Guessous has 50 solo blocks, which ties him for 11th in school history. 102 is the school record, done by David Frette in just 3 seasons from 1989-1991.
• Johnson has 1,262 career points, which ranks him 11th on the all-time school rankings. Szerszen now has 1,152, which puts him 15th.
