Brazilian National Teamer Eder Carbonera has signed with Trentino in Italy for the 2017-2018 season. The 33-year old middle blocker has spent his entire 20-year volleyball career playing in his native Brazil to this point, most recently with Brazilian Cup champions Funvic Taubate, where he spent one season after playing the previous 3 with Sada Cruzeiro.
Carbonera brings a winning pedigree to a club that has a winning tradition of its own. With 4 titles from 2009-2012, Trentino has more FIVB Club World Championships than any other club in history. Sada Cruzeiro, with whom Carbonera won the 2013 and 2015 titles, broke Trentino’s streak, and has now won 3 in total

Carbonera has also been a member of the Brazilian National Team system since 2001, when he won the U17 World Championships with Brazil. To his name, he has a World Championship silver medal from 2014, a World Grand Champion Cup from 2013, a pair of World League titles from 2007 and 2009, and the crowning glory – an Olympic gold medal earned in front of a home crowd last summer in Rio. That gold medal came in a win over Italy – the fans with whom he’ll have to try and make peace for the coming season. Carbonera served primarily as a reserve in that Olympic run, and was one of 2 Brazilians to not see any action in the gold medal match.
Carbonera is also on this year’s Brazilian World League team and had 3 blocks through the first 3 rounds of play.
At 205cm (6’9″) tall, he fits in well among a very tall Trentino squad that had 4 players his height or taller last seaosn.. The team ranked 5th in the Italian Serie A last season with 2.36 blocks/set.
Carbonera spikes at 360cm and blocks at 330cm.
Trentino took 2nd place in Serie A in the regular season last year with a 21-5 overall record. They eventually lost to Lube Civitanova in the championship of both the Italian SuperLega playoff and the Italian Cup (3-0 and 1-0, respectively, in the series).
The team has also added Slovenian National Teamer Jan Kozamernik to their new-look middle block this offseason.
