Head Coach Russ Rose recently released the Nittany Lions’ 2017 schedule, and once again, Penn State will face some of the best teams in the country. The Nittany Lions will face eight 2016 NCAA tournament teams, and seven teams which finished in the Top-25 of the final 2016 AVCA poll.
The Nittany Lions open the season with three straight weekends on the road. They will travel to Morgantown, West Virginia for the West Virginia Tournament, followed by two matches at Texas A&M, before heading to Champaign, IL for the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge. Penn State then finishes the non-conference slate with three matches at home against Yale, Wake Forest, and Ohio. The highlights of Penn State’s pre-conference play look to be its two matches against the defending national champion Stanford Cardinal. Penn State and Stanford have each won 7 NCAA titles in Division I women’s volleyball – which tie them as the most in history.
Things do not get any easier for Penn State once they get into Big Ten play, as they begin their conference season by welcoming 2016 semi-finalists Nebraska to Happy Valley. Penn State will then have to battle its way through Iowa, Illinois and Northwestern at home, before it heads back on the road to take on rival Ohio State and a quickly improving Maryland squad. Penn State finishes off the first half of its Big Ten season by hosting Michigan and Michigan State, then heading to the state of Indiana to take on Purdue and Indiana. Before its Big Ten schedule is complete, Penn State will compete in nine matches against teams who played in the 2016 NCAA Tournament (Nebraska, Minnesota, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, and Purdue).
Penn State brings an experienced roster into the 2017 season. The Nittany Lions return all of its starters from 2016, including AVCA All-Americans Ali Frantti, Simone Lee and Haleigh Washington. The team will look to chase a Division I record eighth national title and improve on a 24-10 record from last season.
