Pepperdine Opens Season With Sweep, Grand Canyon Remains Unbeaten

Two matches closed out the first weekend of the men’s 2018 season, with Grand Canyon ending the weekend with an unblemished record while Pepperdine won their opening match against Cal Lutheran in straight sets.

#10 Pepperdine def. Cal Lutheran 3-0, (25-18, 25-13, 25-14)

It was the opening match for both squads, with #10 ranked Pepperdine crushing Cal Lutheran in straight sets.

Noah Dyer and Colby Harriman each posted 10 kills while Weston Barnes picked up a match-best seven digs. On blocking, the Wave put up a strong wall over Cal Lutheran, stuffing 10.5 balls to their 5. Another statistical anomaly was in serving, with Pepperdine putting down 8 aces to their opponents 0, but this was also offset with 13 Pepperdine service errors to Cal Lutherans 8.

Grand Canyon def. George Mason 3-0, (25-22, 25-17, 25-17)

Grand Canyon completed the weekend sweep over George Mason with a three-set sweep. The Lopes out-performed George Mason on every front with 4-0 aces, 39-33 kills, 11-6 blocks, 35-30 assists and 28-16 digs.

Will Schwab was the kills leader for the Lopes with 15 while Shalev Saada posted five blocks in the win. Sky Engleman picked up double-digit digs with 12.
