UNC Volleyball Stars, Fields and Scoles, Earn ACC Honors

University of North Carolina middle hitter Sydnye Fields and outside hitter Julia Scoles earned this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball honors.

This is the second consecutive week the Tar Heels took both weekly awards category. This is also Scoles’ second time this season earning the Freshman of the Week award whereas this is Fields’ first time being named Player of the Week.   The duo helped maintain the North Carolina’s perfect 5-0 start with wins over in-state rival Duke and TCU.

Fields, a redshirt freshman, opened the weekend by breaking a 30-year-old school record at Duke by recording 15 block assists, 16 total, in the match against Duke. She lifted the Tar Heels to their first 20-block performance in 10 years and set a block assists record (38). At the conclusion of the weekend, Fields tallied 11 kills, 20 blocks and averaged 2.86 blocks per set.

Scoles led the Tar Heels in kills totaling 31, averaged 4.43 kills per set and 3 digs per set over the weekend. She recorded her third straight double-double against rival Duke registering 17 kills and 14 digs. Against TCU, the freshman tallied 14 kills and had a .448 hitting percentage with one error.
