Pitt Underclassmen Highlight Stats At Annual Gold And Blue Scrimmage

The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team held its annual Blue-Gold Scrimmage Saturday afternoon at the Fitzgerald Field House. Team Gold came out on top 2-1 in a three set match.

Gold fell behind early in the opening set but battled back to win 29-27. Blue came out on top in set two, 25-18. With the match tied at one game apiece, the two teams battled back and forth with Gold coming out on top, 25-22, to take the match.

The Panthers’ offense was on display as the two teams combined to put up 86 total kills. Four players racked up double-digit kills including freshman Kayla Lund (18), sophomore Nika Markovic (14), freshman Chinaza Ndee (13) and senior Mariah Bell (11).

Aiding the offense were the Panthers’ two setters, junior Kamalani Akeo and redshirt freshman Kylee Levers. Levers finished the match with 36 assists, while Akeo tallied 35.

At the net, the Gold team won the blocking game, recording 19 total blocks. Markovic, along with junior Emily Horner each tallied six apiece.

Redshirt junior Angela Seman, who was a part of the Gold Team, led both defenses in digs with 10.

At the service line, Pitt recorded 17 total aces, with sophomore Alix Dreier leading the way with four. Lund added three.

Pitt opens the 2017 season in Seattle, Wash., Aug. 25-26. The Panthers will participate in the Washington Tournament, where they will take on two nationally ranked opponents in No. 3 Washington and No. 9 Creighton, in addition to Saint Mary’s.
