Baylor has now won their sixth-straight Big 12 match and second-straight over Kansas State with the four-set victory over the Wildcats.
In all three of the sets that Baylor won, they came out strong and held onto that toughness to hold off the Wildcats, keeping them below 20 points in each of the wins. The second set, however, the Bears faltered slightly as Kansas State jumped out to an early lead and were able to keep that momentum going throughout the set to stop the Baylor 16 consecutive set streak.
The Bears were led by Yossiana Pressley who continues to shine as Katie Staiger is playing more limited due to a foot injury. Pressley put down 24 kills on a .347 hitting clip and 10 digs for a double-double while setter Hannah Lockin dished out 36 assists and 16 digs for a double-double of her own. Staiger made an appearance in the match, recording nine kills and four digs. Aniah Philo and Jana Brusek picked up 16 and 11 digs, respectively.
Baylor head coach Ryan McGuyre about Staiger, “We have to put her on the court. She’s been cleared to go, but she hasn’t practiced in a while either. She did a great job. We put her in some uncomfortable positions… I was really pleased to see how aggressive she was on defense. Those are things you’re kind of afraid will get lost if you’re sitting down, but her aggressiveness, to me, was great.”
For K-State, Kylee Zumach and Brynn Carlson led the team with eight kills each while Sarah Dixon dished out 23 assists and 11 digs for a double-double. Reilly Killeen picked up a team-best 14 digs in the loss.

No. 19 Baylor volleyball (22-5, 12-2 Big 12) pushed its season-best consecutive sets winning streak to 16 before the Bears were forced to fight back from a second-set loss in a 3-1 win over Kansas State (9-18, 2-12 Big 12) Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center, 25-14, 20-25, 25-16, 25-19.
Though the Bears fell one set short of tying the program record set in 2009 with 17 consecutive sets, freshman Yossiana Pressley set a new career-high 24 kills on a .347 hitting clip and added 10 digs for her first career double-double.
Alongside her was freshman Hannah Lockin who posted her eighth double-double with 36 assists and a career-high 16 digs. Katie Staiger posted nine kills on a .389 attack effort.
BU and K-State were deadlocked at 8-8 early in the first set, but a 7-2 run fueled by Aniah Philo and Jana Brusek at the service line put BU in front at the media timeout, 15-10. A block by Shelly Fanning and Philo prompted a K-State timeout at 18-11, and BU never let the Wildcats get close in a dominant 25-14 win in set one.
Now the winner of 16 consecutive sets, BU struggled to get things going in the second frame. BU trailed at 17-12 before going on a 5-0 run with a Fanning kill to tie up the set. K-State would answer with a 5-0 run of its own en route to taking the set, 25-20.
With the match tied at 1-1, Baylor steadily build a lead behind kills from Tola Itiola, Staiger and Pressley to go up 14-7 and force a K-State timeout. BU kept its distance as it went up 2-1 with a dominant 25-16 win.
Baylor came out fast in the fourth frame, using back-to-back kills from Itiola to force a Wildcat timeout at 14-7. Pressley heated up with three consecutive kills to extend BU’s lead to 15-9, and the Bears held off a late K-State run for the four-set win.

K-State setter Sarah Dixon turned in her team-leading 11th double-double and middle blocker Macy Flowers posted a match-high nine blocks, but the Wildcats fell in four sets at No. 19 Baylor, 14-25, 25-20, 16-25, 19-25, Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center.
“We were pleased with our serving and passing,” said head coach Suzie Fritz after the match. “We are having to make some adjustments, asking some people to do a little bit more in those areas than they have in the past and I think they responded well to that. Often times, serve and pass is a pretty important part of being successful, so we were pleased with that part of it.”
Baylor (22-5, 12-2 Big 12) entered the night having won each of its last five matches in straight sets and ran its sets-won streak to 16 – one shy of a program record – after its Set 1 win before K-State (9-18, 2-12 Big 12) ended the run with a 25-20 second-set victory. BU sweeps the season series for the first time since 2010.
Dixon, a redshirt sophomore, handed out a team-high 23 assists to go with 11 digs. Outside hitters Brynn Carlson and Kylee Zumach paced the Wildcat offense with eight kills each while middle blockers Macy Flowers and Peyton Williams both had seven.
Hooper, playing in her first Big 12 match, came off the bench and tallied a career-high four kills on four swings in the final set while picking up two blocks.
Flowers led the defense with nine blocks while Carlson posted four, helping the Cats to a 10.5-7.0 edge in total team blocks as they tallied multiple blocks in each set. Libero Reilly Killeen led K-State with 14 digs, her 12th consecutive match in double figures.
“Brynn Carlson took advantage of her opportunity,” Fritz continued. “Cheyenne Hooper, really the first time we have utilized her strengths, came in and was 4-for-4 as an attacker. For me, the passing core is what really stood out. Reilly Killeenand Devan Fairfield and Kylee Zumach did a nice job of giving us some opportunities for first-swing production.”
The Bears were spearheaded by freshman outside hitter Yossiana Pressley and her match-high 24 kills hit at a .347 clip (7 errors, 49 total attacks). Pressley added 10 digs while teammate Hannah Lockin ended the night with 36 assists and 16 digs.
K-State’s longest scoring run in the first set was a three-point stretch where it took its first lead at 7-6. Baylor retook the lead by scoring six of the next seven points before closing the opening set on a 7-1 stretch. Flowers (3) and Elle Sandbothe (2) were the only Wildcats to register multiple kills in a set in which they hit -.125 (7 kills, 11 errors). Pressley led the Bears’ charge, picking up seven of her team’s 12 kills in the frame.
The Wildcats handed the Bears their first set loss in six matches in the second set. K-State had a lead as large as six at 13-7 before Baylor eventually tied the game at 17, courtesy of a five-point spurt. Following a timeout, the Cats rode their own 5-0 run to a 25-20 victory. Zumach and Carlson each had five kills in Set 2 to help K-State to a 15-12 edge in total kills. The Cats hit .286 while holding BU to .108 behind three team blocks.
Baylor’s 12-2 run, including six straight, midway through the third set opened an 11-point advantage for the Bears, a lead that proved insurmountable for the Cats. K-State hit .094 (8k-5e-32ta) in a set in which its only lead was after scoring the game’s first two points. Peyton Williams registered three kills while Carlson added two in the frame.
The Bears continued their momentum into the final set, jumping out to a 4-1 lead and extending that lead to eight points at 18-10 following a 10-3 spurt. K-State cut that lead to four (22-18) after Hooper’s fourth kill, however, that is as close as the Cats came in the final set in which they never led. Hooper recorded all four of her kills in Set 4. Pressley added eight kills in the set as BU had 19 in the set while hitting .350.
“At this point in time, we still feel like we need to be a better transition team and be able to get more opportunities for transition swings and better transition swings,” Fritz added. “There’s a lot of things that lead up to that: dig quality, set quality, attacking range and purpose. We are going to try and tackle that in the next couple days.”
Baylor held 59-42 edge in total kills and a 67-53 advantage in team digs.
K-State will finish its conference schedule with back-to-back home matches, beginning with Oklahoma (7-19, 4-9 Big 12) visiting Ahearn Field House on Saturday for a7 p.m., first serve.
