Semifinals Set For German Women’s Bundesliga

The German women’s Bundesliga has ended their quarterfinals play with Schwerin, Stuttgart, Dresden and Wiesbaden advancing to the semifinal round.

The quaterfinals began on March 18 and concluded on March 27. The series between the teams was a best of three with two match ups requiring the third and deciding match.

Schwerin vs. Aachen

Schwerin took the first match over Aachen in a three set sweep 3-0, (25-10, 25-19, 25-15). The top scorer for Schwerin was Jennifer Geerties with 14 points, who helped the team to dominate over Aachen, who did score over 20 points in any set. Lauren Barfield was named the MVP of the match.

The second match took Schwerin four sets to take down Aachen 3-1, (25-23, 22-25, 25-16, 25-19). The first set was a tough fight to 25, with Schwerin taking the set, but Aachen fought back in the second to tie up the match at 1-1. The final two sets of the match went all Schwerin’s way, holding their opponents to under 20 point in the sets. Ariel Gebhardt earned the MVP honor of the match recording 16 points after not seeing the court in the first two sets.

Stuttgart vs. Muenster

The first match of the series went into a five set battle with Stuttgart taking the victory over Muenster 3-2, (25-13, 25-15, 22-25, 20-25, 15-13).  The first two sets for Stuttgart were a walk in the park, with Muenster no where near them, but they came back with a vengeance in the third and fourth to send the match into a deciding set. The final set of the match was a back and forth battle to the finish, with Stuttgart coming out on top. Wanna Buakaew earned the MVP award in the match.

Stuttgart was able to complete the series in two sets with a four set win 3-1, (25-17, 19-25, 25-20, 25-20).  Muenster was able to tie up the match after dropping the first at 1-1 with a 25-19 second set win – but Stuttgart came out on top post 25-20 scores in the final two sets. Michaela Mlejnkova took home the MVP award with 13 points in the match.

Dresden vs. Vilsbiburg

Dresden took the first match in a sweep 3-0, (25-14, 25-21, 25-9). American Kadie Rolfzen was able to take the MVP honor of the match after posting 14 points.

The second match of the series fell to Vilsbiburg in four sets 3-1, (14-25, 25-15, 28-26, 25-23), forcing a third and deciding match. Vilsbiburg fell hard the first set, but recovered nicely to tie the match in the second. The final two sets of the match were tough battles ending in Vilsbiburg victories. Lena Stigrot earned the MVP award for the winning squad.

In the deciding match, Dresden punched their ticket to the semifinals with a three set sweep that was far from easy 3-0, (29-27, 25-21, 25-23). The first set was forced into extra points with Dreden emerging on top 29-27. The next two sets Dresden fought until the end, coming out on top over Vilbiburg. The matches MVP honor went to Myrthe Matilde Schoot.

Wiesbaden vs. Potsdam

Potsdam began the series with a five set win over Wiesbaden 3-2, (14-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 15-13) in comeback style. After going down 0-2 in the match, Potsdam fought back to tie the match and send it into a deciding game. In the fifth, Potsdam fought a back and forth battle until they claimed the first match 15-13. Ann-Marie Knauf was awarded the MVP honor.

Wiesbaden hit back in the second match, sweeping Potsdam 3-0, (25-21, 25-21, 25-20). Tanja Great earned the matches MVP award.

The final match of the series went to Wiesbaden, who made their way to the semifinals with the win 3-1, (25-19, 16-25, 25-20, 25-21). The MVP slot was awarded to Mallory Grace McCage.
