Volleyball coaches nationwide have the opportunity to add members to their rosters on National Signing Day in November and also in April as recruits sign National Letters of Intent. Until a student-athlete signs an NLI, his or her commitment, verbal or otherwise, is not binding.
Only scholarship athletes may typically be announced on National Signing Day in the fall as only scholarship athletes sign national letters of intent, which are most closely related to signing day. A national letter of intent is a binding agreement between a recruit and his/her parents and an institution.
By signing an NLI, the student-athlete agrees to attend the institution for one year in exchange for the institution’s promise to provide athletics financial aid for the entire academic year. Once a recruit signs an NLI, they are stating that their recruiting process has ended and they may no longer be recruited by another school. The spring/summer signing period may allow for the announcement of non-scholarship walk-on athletes who have been admitted to an institution and paid all relevant fees.
In 2016, the early signing period was November 9-16. The regular signing period began today, April 12, and continues through August 1.
