Stanford Ends the Weekend Winless in Santa Barbara: Jan. 6 Recap

#15 PRINCETON DEF. #6 STANFORD 3-2 (28-26, 17-25, 25-22, 22-25, 16-14)

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.– Princeton upset Stanford on Saturday in the 2018 Asics Invitational in the Thunderdome at UCSB. Princeton was playing without All-East middle, Junior Oboh, due to injury. This is the first time Princeton has defeated a top-10 ranked team, and Stanford remains winless.

Princeton setter, Joe Kelly, ran the offense for the Tigers with 45 assists and four digs. Greg Luck led the team in kills and digs, putting away 21 balls on a .452 clip and scooping up ten digs for a double-double on the match. Parker Dixon also had an impressive offensive performance with 13 kills and two errors on 33 attempts for a .333 hitting percentage. The team posted 9.5 blocks.

Jaylen Jasper fueled the Stanford offense with 20 kills. He was fed by setter, Mason Tufuga, who recorded 29 assists. Evan Enriques posted a match-high 15 digs for the Cardinal.

 

#13 CSUN DEF. #15 PRINCETON 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-21)

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.– CSUN swept Princeton on Saturday in the UCSB Asics Invitational in the Thunderdome at UCSB. CSUN has won all three matches at this tournament for the third year in a row.

CSUN setters, Sam Porter and Schylar Lillethorup, ran the offense for the Matadors with 24 and 13 assists, respectively. Arvis Greene led the team in kills, putting away 14 balls on a .207 clip. Dimitar Kalchev also had an impressive offensive performance with 11 kills and three errors on 22 attempts for a .364 hitting percentage. The team posted 9.5 blocks.

Jess Hunt fueled the Princeton offense with 11 kills. He was fed by setter, Joe Kelly, who recorded 25 assists. The team posted 22 digs and eight blocks.

#2 LBSU DEF. SFU 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-13)

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.– LBSU swept SFU on Saturday in the 2018 UCSB ASICS Tournament in the Thunderdome at UCSB. TJ DeFalco and Josh Tuaniga were named to the All-Tournament team from Long Beach.

Long Beach setter, Josh Tuaniga, ran the offense for the 49ers with 23 assists. DeFalco led the team in kills, putting away 14 balls on a .765 clip and scooping up five digs on the match. Simon Anderson also had an impressive offensive performance with six kills and two error on nine attempts for a .444 hitting percentage. The team posted 7.5 blocks.

Cole Thompson fueled the SFU offense with six kills. He was fed by setter, Joseph Koszelak, who recorded 16 assists. The team posted 13 digs on the night.

#8 UC IRVINE DEF. #12 LOYOLA 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-22)

PROVO, Utah– Irvine defeated Loyola on Saturday in the Smith Fieldhouse at BYU. Irvine freshman Joel Schneidmiller had a career match with 12 kills.

Dante Chakravorti delivered 42 assists and Karl Apfelbach put away 22 kills hitting .444. Apfelbach also led the defense with 15 digs for a double-double. The Anteaters came away from the match with 47 digs and 11 blocks.

Collin Mahan led the offense for Loyola with 14 kills, hitting .273. Defensively, Garrett Zolg led the way with 13 digs. Zolg accounted for 40 of 49 assists for the Ramblers.

#16 GCU DEF. #17 GMU 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-10)

FAIRFAX, Va.– GCU defeated George Mason on Saturday in the first of two games between the teams.

GCU setter, Puna Kaniho, ran the offense for the Lopes with 48 assists and 9 digs. Cody Williams led the team in kills, putting away 18 balls on a .484 clip. Caleb Blazer also had an impressive offensive performance with seven kills and one error on 12 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage. The team posted eight blocks.

Christian Malias fueled the George Mason offense with 16 kills. He was fed by setter, Luis Velez, who recorded 39 assists. The back row was controlled by, Johnny Gomez, as he dug up 10.

#18 UCSB DEF. #6 STANFORD 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-22)

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.– UCSB upset and swept Stanford on Saturday in the finale of the 2018 Asics Invitational in the Thunderdome.

Santa Barbara setter, Randy DeWeese, ran the offense for the Gauchos with 31 assists and six digs. Roy McFarland and Corey Chavers led the team in kills, putting away 9 balls a piece. McFarland hit an impressive .571. The team posted six blocks.

Jaylen Jasper fueled the Stanford offense with eight kills. He was fed by setter, Russel Dervay, who recorded 17 assists. The back row was controlled by, Evan Enriquez, as he dug up 10.
