Only twice in NCAA beach volleyball championship history has there been an upset where the seed difference was more than 1. The other: last year, where #4 Florida State beat #2 UCLA in the semi-finals of the elimination bracket. The other small handful of upsets have all been 1-seed differences.
The top four seeds moved on in the winner’s bracket, dropping just one pairing of the 13 played to completion….
With such a tough field, and no obvious alignment to point to, this one is a lot about gut-feelings. UCLA should roll through the winners bracket untouched, but the question then becomes can anybody beat them twice?
Senior Madeline Mertz and sophomore Kaylie McHugh were named among 48 American Volleyball Coaches Association Top Flight Award winners, the organization announced Thursday.
In an upgrade from the 2017 coverage, all 14 matches will be broadcast live, an improvement over a three-hour timeslot on day one and two. The broadcasts also will be coming on the ESPN family of networks, vs. truTV, which aired the preliminary matches and TBS which showed the championship match.
With the top three teams from the East and the West pretty well nailed down, the two at-large berths offered a few surprises as a team from each region was included in the eight team field, leaving two of the nation’s top six ranked teams on the outside looking in.
The 8 teams chosen for the 2018 NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship will be announced on Sunday at 7PM Eastern Time….
The 2018 Pac-12 Champions UCLA are almost assured of the #1 seed. After that, things are wide open for Gulf Shores.
With one week left before the NCAA Championship selections are made, there were no changes to the Top 11 spots in the AVCA Top 20 Beach poll.
