As more players were coming in from other states across India, the Tamil Nadu State Volleyball Association (TNSVA) has announced their decision to ban players from other states from participating in their tournaments.

This decision comes in the wake that many players from Tamil Nadu have been seen to have less of an opportunity to participate as players from other states flood the colleges in Tamil Nadu. There are as many as 29 players that have represented the state before through various age levels and different levels of competition that will be feeling the full effect of the ban this coming year.

“For years, players from Kerala have made their presence felt in Tamil Nadu volleyball and represented the state in tournaments including the nationals. This unjust decision is a huge blow to many who have enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate courses in TN and whose careers more or less depends on the opportunities they get during their 3-4 years stay there,” said E K Kishore Kumar, former India international volleyball player in an interview with The New Indian Express.

Protests from colleges and universities forced the TNSVA to allow colleges, universities and clubs the ability to register two out-of-state participants in tournaments this year. This ruling takes effect for just this season with the full ruling to take effect in the next season.

The decision could come as a blow to some of the players for the colleges or universities, as they are in their first or second year of their degree with the TNSVA enforcing the strict ban immediately instead of giving players the opportunity to finish their degree or transfer to another state. Tamil Nadu is a state that offers free tuition to a lot of athletes, making the ban hard for players coming in from another state that does not offer these kinds of opportunities.
