Navarro High School in Seguin, Texas has hired Nicole Blakeman as their new head coach, replacing the retiring Phyllis Fowler at the helm of the program. Navarro advanced to the Texas Class 4A (on a 6-class ladder) semifinals last season before losing to Argyle High School.

Blakeman launched the volleyball program at San Antonio’s Johnson High School in 2008. She led Johnson to the state playoffs 7 times in 9 seasons, including qualifying for the semi-finals of the state’s largest classification in 2011. Prior to that, she spent 8 years coaching at her alma mater Clearlake High School near Houston, and at Rockwall High School. In total, over 22 years of coaching she has a 575-296 record.

“She’s got several years of experience building programs at three different large schools,” Navarro athletic director Les Goad told the Seguin Gazette. “We felt with her experience and background, hopefully we can continue with the kind of success coach Fowler built.”

Navarro finished the 2016 season with a 44-5 record, and made the state tournament for the first time since 1976.
