A schedule match between the Texas A&M Aggies and the Texas State Bobcats has been cancelled due to the looming threat of Hurricane Harvey. The Texas State volleyball team returned to San Marcos on Friday night after beating Sam Houston State 3-0, and the match will not be rescheduled. A&M still played Saturday evening against VCU, who they beat 3-0.
Harvey made landfall in Corpus Christi as a Category 4 storm late Friday evening and has been camped out in Southeast Texas ever since. College Station, home of Texas A&M University, has been receiving significant rain on Friday evening, but San Marcos, where Texas State is located, has been experiencing life-threatening squalls throughout the day on Saturday.
The storm has been downgraded to a tropical storm, but is expected to continue to impact South Central and Southeast Texas throughout the week with record-breaking rainfalls.
Texas State is scheduled to play at the Xavier University tournament in Cincinnati, Ohio next weekend, though the storm could still impact those plans. A&M, meanwhile, is scheduled to host another tournament next weekend – where they would welcome in NCAA Championship contenders Penn State and Stanford to Reed Arena.
A&M is in rebuilding mode from a season that saw them enter the year as the favorites in the SEC, but end the year out of the NCAA tournament. Texas State received votes in the AVCA pre-season rankings.
Several other matches have been impacted by the storm. The Barcelona HBU Classic in Houston was cancelled, which featured among other teams Texas Tech. Tech instead traveled to Denton, Texas to open their season against North Texas.
Incarnate Word’s Cardinal Classic Tournament in San Antonio was cancelled, with UTEP also making their way to Denton to scramble a spot in the North Texas Invitational.
Estimates of the damage that will be caused by the storm now exceed $2 billion, and Saturday saw the first confirmed fatality as a result of Harvey.
