Thailand is set to host 61 beach pairs from 19 nations at the AVC Asia Beach Volleyball Championships commence on April 14-17 in Songkhla.
The tournament will provide crucial AVC Tour ranking points to the winning duos in preparation for the Vienna 2017, FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships. The championship will begin towards the end of the summer – beginning on July 28 and ending on August 6 for the men and August 5 on the women’s side.
With the FIVB World Championships looming in the distance, this is the most important beach volleyball event in Asia – being named the Asian Championships by Ampon Pongsuwan, the Chief of Songkhla Governor’s Office.
“We are now ready for the tournament. Accommodations, the competition courts and also volunteers are well-prepared to make sure that all gets set for this tournament,” said Pongsuwan.
Last season, China’s Chen Xue and Xia Xinya won the women’s gold while Australia’s Chris McHugh and Isaac Kapa stop atop the podium on the men’s side.
In route of the World Championships each confederation will be allotted four entries per gender. The FIVB Entry Rankings will take precedent over the Continental Qualification path for each confederation. There will be three wild card selections – one to the organizers and two to the FIVB. The host country, Austria, will be guaranteed two entries.
