IRVING, Texas – Four players hailing from four different programs received Conference USA honors this week. Abby Carlile of UAB and Charlotte’s Nya Steele boasted career-high numbers to claim Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respectively. Rice swept through the team’s Adidas Invitational I and Grace Morgan garnered Defensive Player of the Week. Florida Atlantic’s Ivone Martinez picked up the FAU Invitational MVP crown on her way to winning Setter of the Week. All C-USA weekly awards are presented by Top of the World Headwear.
Offensive Player of the Week
Abby Carlile, UAB, So., Southlake, Texas
Carlile garnered her career’s first weekly award following a standout showing at the Skyhawk Invite. The sophomore powered UAB to a 3-1 record while setting career-high numbers, including six blocks and 19 kills at a .429 clip in a win over a tough Central Arkansas squad. Against Florida A&M, the Southlake, Texas, native hit a blistering .500 on 14 kills, adding to her total 54 on the weekend. Not only did she average a .372 attack percentage, Carlile muscled 13 blocks and 15 digs on the defensive side of the ball.

Defensive Player of the Week
Grace Morgan, Rice, Jr., Crowley, La.
Morgan picked up her second all-tournament team selection of the year as the Owls hosted and swept through the Rice Adidas Invitational I last weekend. The junior lifted the squad to a 3-0 showing, including a 3-1 victory over SEC foe South Carolina. Morgan registered 14 blocks in 11 sets, 10 of those coming in a win over Houston Baptist. The performance tied the most blocks by a C-USA player in four sets this season. The middle blocker also mustered up four digs, three service aces, 3.32 points per set and 24 kills while hitting .412 for an all-around stellar effort on the weekend.

Setter of the Week
Ivone Martinez, Florida Atlantic, Sr., Mexicali, Mexico
The senior setter led the nation in assists per set last season and remains in the top-10 after anchoring the Owl defense to three sweeps and the FAU Invitational crown on Saturday. Martinez earned MVP honors as she averaged 11.44 assists on three 30+-assist matches. Florida Atlantic’s hitting percentage didn’t dip under .300 through nine sets and topped out at a remarkable .469 against St. Peter’s on Friday. The Mexico product also chipped in 16 digs, five kills, two aces and a block.

Freshman of the Week
Nya Steele, Charlotte, Fr., Clemmons, N.C.
Steele crafted a complete effort that was vital in Charlotte’s claiming of the Rose Hill Classic at Fordham last weekend. The newcomer dished out 162 assists with 40 digs, four blocks and seven kills on a .412 hitting efficiency through the 49ers’ 3-1 outing. Steele served up back-to-back double-doubles to open the tournament. She posted 37 assists and 12 digs against Bryant before setting a career-high with 49 helpers and 18 digs in a win over Bryant.
