The USC women’s volleyball team revealed its 2017 fall schedule on Thursday (June 15). The Women of Troy will appear on television 15 times this season including once on ESPNU. USC will appear on the Pac-12 Network’s national and regional channels the other 14 times. The Trojans are scheduled to face 11 teams that earned NCAA Tournament bids in 2016, which includes four regional finalists and defending national champion Stanford.
“The Pac-12 and the Pac-12 Networks are without a doubt the leader in the promotion of the sport of women’s volleyball,” said 17th-year head coach Mick Haley. “I love the fact that our team will appear on television 15 times this season. People will get to see over 85 matches on the networks and our own USC fans will get to watch us while we’re on the road, which is fantastic.”
In non-league tournaments, the Women of Troy open the season on Friday, Aug. 25, against Loyola Marymount at 11 a.m. PT at Gersten Pavilion. The Lions and Trojans are joint hosts for the first weekend’s tournament. USC draws Michigan in its first home match and will take on the Wolverines at 8 p.m. PT on Pac-12 Los Angeles. Michigan was an NCAA regional semifinalist in 2016.
The Trojans then spend the next three weekends on the road. USC heads to Omaha, Neb., for the Bluejay Invitational hosted by Creighton, Sept. 1-2, at the D.J. Sokol Arena. The Trojans and the Bluejays face each other on Saturday (Sept. 2) at 12:30 p.m. CT. USC will also take on Kentucky and Northern Iowa in the same tourney. All three teams were NCAA tournament teams last fall with Creighton advancing to the regional finals.
On the third weekend, USC goes up the California coast for a three-match tournament at UC Santa Barbara’s Thunderdome (Sept. 8-9). The Trojans open the tourney against Arkansas and will also face Yale. USC and UCSB meet at 7 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 8). In their final two non-conference matches, the Trojans head across the country to meet Maryland (Sept. 14) and Oklahoma (Sept. 15) in the Maryland Challenge at Xfinity Pavilion in College Park, Md.
USC’s conference schedule opens on Sept. 20 with a matchup against crosstown rival UCLA. The teams will clash on ESPNU with first serve set for 8 p.m. PT at Pauley Pavilion. The Trojans will later wrap the regular-season against the Bruins at Galen Center on Nov. 25. In between, the Women of Troy will take on the defending Pac-12 champion Washington Huskies at home (Oct. 1) and on the road (Oct. 27) and must also face the defending NCAA champion Stanford Cardinal at home (Oct. 15) and on the road (Nov. 15) for four marquee midseason league bouts.
With the Pac-12’s 20-match league schedule, the Trojans will only face Oregon State at home (Oct. 24) and will take on Oregon only once, on the road (Nov. 22). All of USC’s non-televised matches will be streamed live on the Pac-12+ web platform. Please visit USCTrojans.com or the opponent’s website for links this fall.
The Women of Troy earned a program-record 26th consecutive berth into the NCAA tournament (34th overall appearance) and finished 2016 with an 18-14 overall record. USC was 10-10 in Pac-12 matches and finished in a tie for seventh place. The Trojans won three of their four pre-conference tournaments and became the 17th NCAA Division I program to cross the 1,000 all-time victories threshold with a win over Arizona State on Oct. 5. Haley earned his 400th win as the Trojans’ head coach.
