As part of its recruiting class for 2018, UT Arlington is tacking on a junior college transfer in the form of Petra Manderson from Hillsborough Community College. A junior-to-be in 2018, Manderson will have two years left of play and be immediately eligible for the Mavericks.
A 5’10” outside hitter, Manderson played two seasons at Hillsborough CC after her time with Burnside High School. Last year she notched 3.03 kills and 2.56 digs per set while hitting .229 – all improvements on strong stats in 2016.
A native of New Zealand, Manderson was also the captain of the U-23 Women’s National Team in the 2017 Asian Championships.
“Petra brings a wealth of volleyball knowledge to the Maverick program from her experience playing internationally,” UT Arlington head coach J.T. Wenger said in the team’s release of the signing. “She has been a part of the game at the highest levels and that involvement has prepared her for the next level. Petra has great vision of the block and has carried a huge load for Hillsborough over the past two seasons. She is a well-rounded six-rotation outside hitter that gives us depth on the pen. As an incoming junior, she will bring experience that will help a young outside hitting core as they adjust to the college game. He experience will raise the level in our gym.”
UT Arlington is coming off of a 13-17 season and had seven players on their roster with outside hitter positionality. Of those seven, four are just outside hitters with a pair of the quartet graduating this year.
