UTSA head volleyball coach Laura Neugebauer-Groff announced Monday the hiring of Paul Koncir as an associate head coach for the upcoming 2018 season.
“I am very excited to add someone like Paul [Koncir] to my staff,” Neugebauer-Groff said. “He is well-connected, well-respected and his experience will bring a lot to our team. He possesses an energetic coaching style that will help our players to maximize their potential.”
The newly-named associate head coach comes to the Alamo City following stops at Indiana, Towson, Georgetown and George Mason.
“I would like to thank Laura, Christine Moeller and Director of Athletics Lisa Campos for the opportunity to join the UTSA Athletics family,” Koncir said. “I am thrilled and excited to be a part of the Roadrunner volleyball program and am ready to get to work on its future. UTSA volleyball has a great tradition of success under Laura and I believe this staff can grow the program in new and exciting directions. The team has great attitudes and is exceptionally willing. The campus is outstanding and San Antonio has everything that my family and I could ask for in a home.”
In his last collegiate coaching stint, Koncir was the interim head coach of the Indiana volleyball program, after serving as an associate head coach from 2016-2018 and assistant coach from 2010-2016 for the IU volleyball program.
In 2016, the Hoosiers finished the season with 17 wins, their most since the 2010 season. The Hoosiers started the season 9-0 for the fourth time in program history and went 11-2 in non-conference play. Indiana beat two ranked teams in No. 13 Michigan and No. 22 Ohio State, its most wins over ranked opponents since the 2010 season. The Hoosiers beat four teams that made the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
Koncir also helped Indiana advance to the 2010 NCAA Tournament, where the Hoosiers made a run to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in program history. The Hoosiers finished the season 23-12 and saw Ashley Benson and Jordan Haverly earn All-Big Ten recognition. The Hoosiers won a 3-1 thriller at home over eventual NCAA champion Penn State, and IU took down Tennessee and Miami in NCAA first and second round action.
Prior to Indiana, Koncir lead Towson to two trips to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships, a top-100 recruiting class (2009), six All-CAA selections, a CAA Rookie of the Year and a 2010 commitment from an Under Armour High School All-American.
Before taking over at Towson, Koncir spent four years as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s teams at George Mason (2004-06).
Koncir played for the Patriots from 1995-98. He started every match his senior season at outside hitter and was second on the team in kills. He has had a full playing career since graduating from Mason. In 1998 and 1999, Koncir was a member of the USAV Chesapeake Region championship team. In 1998 and 2002, he played for the Bahama International Tournament champions. In 2003, he was the Scottish Open Tournament MVP and in 2000 and 2004, his team won the Scottish Open.
Koncir’s coaching trail also includes stops as an assistant coach for the Georgetown women’s team (2001-03), head coach of the Georgetown men’s club team (2003) and assistant for both programs back at George Mason in 1999.
Koncir graduated from George Mason in 1999 with a degree in studio arts.
Koncir resides to San Antonio with his wife, Kelsey.
