Background

Spanish club Teruel Volleyball has announced in its official twitter page the passing away of its libero, Vinicius Silva, at only 26 years of age. The Brazilian national was found dead in his apartment by his teammates after missing one of the team’s practice. Upon his signing with the club, Vinicius had passed all necessary physical tests carried by the team. Vinicius arrived in Spain in 2015 and last year was voted as the competition’s best libero.

Story

Teruel’s president Carlos Ranera has released a statement confirming that Vinicius Silva’s autopsy revealed that the player passed away from Sudden Cardiac Death. The condition, which is very rare, still baffles most doctors and scientists, with diagnosis usually occurring post-mortem. According to the specific medical literature, Sudden Cardiac Death is the most common medical cause of death in athletes, with an incidence of around 1 in 40,000 to 1 in 80,000 athletes per year according to the most recent estimates.

The Spanish conducted a crowd funding initiative to send Vinicius’s body to Brazil. The procedure is very expensive, costing around 12,000 USD. The initiative was a success, with the target value being achieved in less than 24 hours.
