Volleyball player and coach Benson Louie was among 3 shooting victims who lost their lives last week at a UPS facility in Portero Hill, near San Francisco. Louie, who had spent 17 years working for UPS, had a whole separate life outside of his job and has been called a “legend” of nine-man volleyball.
Louie, along with Wayne Chan and Michael Lefiti, were shot by 38-year-old Jimmy Lam, who then killed himself. last week. Two others were shot last Wednesday, June 14th, but survived their injuries, according to CNN. Lam was a former employee at the facility who NBC says was struggling with mental health issues.
The 50-year old Louie was a lifelong volleyball player, including his grand reputation in a Chinese version of volleyball that includes 9 players. Louie was heavily involved with the San Francisco Paai Kau Smash Volleyball Club, Last April, he traveled with his team to China and was planning another trip to Brooklyn for a tournament on June 25th.
Memorials of Louie poured out across Facebook in a personal reminder that victims of violence are more than just statistics: they are people too. The San Francisco Chronicle also wrote a memorial of Louie’s time as a volleyball coach and in his community here.
