Canada rebounded from a Day 1 loss to Cuba with a sweep of Trinidad and Tobago, meanwhile the Dominican Republic and Peru moved to 2-0 in Group B play with straight set wins.

A strong blocking presence and double-digit point tallies from Jennifer Cross and Kyla Richey led Canada to its first Pan Am Cup victory with double-digit point tallies.
The Canadians outblocked T&T 16-7 and served up seven aces, while allowing just three. Twenty-nine errors also aided the winning cause.
Cross, who played collegiately at Michigan, put up 11 points, including a match-high seven blocks and two aces, while Richey managed six kills, two blocks and two aces. Captain Lucille Charuk added nine points, including five stuffs.
Sinead Jack and Krystle Esdelle put down nine points apiece to lead T&T, with each managing seven kills. Jack also added two blocks, while Esdelle tallied a block and an ace.
Dominican Republic 3, Chile 0
Bethania De La Cruz needed just over an hour (67 minutes) to rack up a match-high 22 points, while leading her Dominican Republic team to another Pan Am Cup win.
DeLaCruz pounded down 20 kills and added two aces in the victory. Isabel Yonkaira Paola Pena added 14 points, with 12 kills, while Annerys Victoria Vargas Valdez chipped in 11 points, with seven kills, three blocks and an ace.
“We didn’t know too much about Chile and they showed good ball handling,” De La Cruz said. “In the second set we made too many errors but then recovered and played a good third and the victory in three sets.”
The DR side tallied 75 points, while allowing just 48, helped by 50 kills and eight aces. Chile managed just 22 kills, but matched its foes with five blocks.
Chilean captain Catalina Melo led the side with nine points, including seven kills and two aces.
“It was a very tough match against a very experienced team,” Melo said. “The good thing is that we didn’t quit and played hard until the end.”
Peru 3, Cuba 0
Cuba could not compete with Peru at the net, as the Peruvians posted 11 blocks in Sunday’s sweep. Peru also had help from six aces and 19 Cuban errors.
“The serve was our main weapon and we used it very well today,” Peruvian captain Mirtha Uribe said. “We have improved our blocking in the three weeks we have been under the new coach. The blocking is a work in progress but it is evolving well.”
Peru’s Carla Rueda put up 18 points, with 13 kills, three blocks and two aces, to lead all scorers. Angela Leyva added 14 points, all on kills, and Clarivett Ylescas chipped in 11, including a match-high five blocks.
Heidy Casanova Alvarez managed 11 points, all on kills, to top the Cuban scoring. Sulian Caridad Matienzo Linares added nine points, all on kills.
“We made too many errors and Peru played very well,” Cuban captain Sulian Matienzo said. “We could not play our game and entered to the match a little nervous. Our mistakes were the big difference.”
