Shelton Collier became the ninth coach to ever reach the 1,000 win plateau in NCAA history after his Wingate squad took down North Greenville in four sets.

A nine-time SAC Coach of the Year recipient, Collier has also won the NCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Year six times including the AVCA National Coach of the Year in 2013.

Before his time at Wingate, Collier was at Pittsburgh and Georgia Tech where he won conference coach of the year honors at each stop.

The match didn’t start out in Wingate’s favor as North Greenville came out on top in the first set, 25-23. Wingate responded though as Collier helped the team make some adjustments and they took the second set 25-14. Things only got better in the third with a dominating 25-7 set victory to take a 2-1 set edge. The fourth was closer at 25-18, but still Wingate came out on top for the four-set victory and Collier’s 1,000th of his career.

“We are appreciative that we could arrange a competitive match at home in place of not being able to play in the Flagler Tournament this weekend,” Collier told Wingate Athletics after the match. “It was great that we could compete and make some progress tonight and we are pleased that we had some strong performances.”

Beyond the historic mark for Collier, Wingate now sits at 6-0 as they look to improve on last season’s 29-6 finish when they won the SAC Tournament and fell in the NCAA Southeast Regionals in a tight five-set match.
