In a campaign against gender violence in Afghanistan, the United Nations hosted a volleyball for Afghan female players.

One of the players, Muzhgan Sadat, recalls how she changed her father’s mentality towards women playing volleyball, “Initially, my father was against my playing volleyball, he threw away my jerseys. I begged by father to reconsider and when he finally saw me play, he changed his mentality,” said Sadat.

Sadat encourages women to use their abilities, not just in sports but in their community.

“I urge every single person, please change your mind and don’t look down on women,” said Sadat. “A woman has the same abilities as a man does.”

Just two years ago there were no women’s volleyball teams in Afghanistan, but with the help of the United Nations Development Program the sport is beginning to evolve.

The sport of volleyball has been a popular sport in Afghanistan, but just recently has there been any development on the women’s side.
