NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The CSUN Matadors hosted the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors on Thursday night, and the Matadors pulled off the upset and sweep. The two teams will face each other again Friday night in the Matadome.
Leading the CSUN offense was fifth-year senior opposite, Arvis Greene, with 18 kills on a .438 clip. Eric Chance also had an impressive offensive performance with eight kills and one error, hitting .700. Setter Sam Porter ran the offense with 38 assists and added three digs.
Hawaii was led by Stijn van Tilburg (.333) and Austin Matautia (.200) with 18 and seven kills, respectively. Van Tilburg also led the defensive campaign with seven digs and also added in a service ace. They were fueled by setter Joe Worsley, who tabbed 28 assists and 2 digs on the match, along with three kills on five attempts.
Both teams will resume play on Friday against each other in the Matadome.

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The CSUN men’s volleyball team made its 3-0 upset win over third-ranked Hawai’i Thursday a memorable one as head coach Jeff Campbell earned his 300th career victory and the Matadors picked up their first-ever Big West Conference win.
CSUN (11-7, 1-2 Big West) put together arguably its most complete outing of the season in knocking off the Rainbow Warriors for the first time since 2013. Senior Arvis Greene tied for match-high honors with 18 kills, hitting .438 on 32 swings.
“That was a great match, anytime Arvis hits .438 we’re going to be in really good shape,” said Campbell. “Eric (Chance), Dimitar (Kalchev) and Maciej (Ptaszynski) all played well, our passing was really solid, Emmett (Enriques) was outstanding. We played as good a volleyball match as we’ve played all year and this was against a really good Hawai’i team.”
Kalchev added nine kills (.263) and a team-high nine digs while Chance chipped in eight kills (.700) and three blocks. Junior setter Sam Porter handed out 38 assists in leading the Matadors to a .352 hitting effort.
Campbell, who earned his first CSUN coaching win against Quincy in 1998, earned his 300th career win in his 594th career match.
“I owe a lot to the players that have been here and everyone associated with CSUN men’s volleyball,” said Campbell. “I’m really proud to be here and I love what this team and this University stand for. To have 300 wins at this University, where I graduated from and that I played for, it’s just a real honor and is very sentimental to me.”
The Matadors took advantage of a pair of Hawai’i hitting errors to open up a 5-2 lead early in set one. CSUN still led 8-6 when a Chance kill was followed by a pair of Ptaszynski kills giving the Matadors a five-point cushion (11-6). The Warriors trimmed the lead to 12-8 when Josiah Byers connected for consecutive kills to highlight a 3-0 CSUN run. The Matador lead swelled to as many as nine at 23-14 before a Hawai’i service error ended the set.
The visitors appeared poised to even the match after Stijn van Tilburg’s kill gave Hawai’i a 19-16 lead in set two. The teams then traded sideouts before a Chance kill propelled the Matadors on a 3-0 run which tied the score at 20. The score was still knotted at 21, when kills from van Tilburg and Austin Matautia put Hawaii’i on top 23-21. But consecutive kills by Greene evened the set for the fourth time at 23-23.
Ptaszynski’s serve found the net setting up the Warriors with set point at 24-23, but Porter, Byers and Chance got their hands up on consecutive blocks and a Hawai’i attack went long on set point giving the Matadors the comeback 26-24 win.
The final set was tied seven times, the last at 20-20, when a Greene kill and a Matautia hitting error gave the Matadors a 22-20 lead. CSUN still led by two at 24-22 when the visitors saved one match point following a van Tilburg kill, but Chance connected out of the middle on the Matadors’ second match point and CSUN claimed its inaugural Big West win.
For Hawai’i (13-4, 1-2 Big West), van Tilburg matched Greene with 18 kills, hitting .333 on 33 attacks. The Rainbow Warriors hit .193 as a team after coming into the match hitting .371.
The same two teams complete the regular season series Friday night at 7 p.m.

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The third-ranked University of Hawai’i men’s volleyball team suffered its second straight defeat, falling to No. 10 CSUN in straight sets in a Big West Conference match-up at The Matadome. Set scores were 25-18, 26-24, 25-23.
The Rainbow Warriors (13-4, 1-2 BWC) saw their eight-match win streak over the Matadors come to an end and lost consecutive matches for the first time this season. CSUN (11-7, 1-2) picked up its first-ever Big West Conference win.
The teams meet again Friday at 7:00 p.m. PT (4:00 p.m. HT).
UH outside hitter Stijn van Tilburg shared match-high kill honors with CSUN’s Alvis Greene with 18 kills. Van Tilburg hit .333 for the match compared to .438 for Greene.
Outside hitter Austin Matautia, who had 18 aces in his last five matches, tallied one of Hawai’i’s four aces, along with seven kills and four digs. In fact, setter Joe Worsley‘s three kills were third-most on the team. Worsley directed the UH offense to .193 hitting, the lowest of the season.
On a bright spot, Hawai’i tallied eight blocks with middle blockers Patrick Gasman (4) and Dalton Solbrig (3) combining for seven and allowed only two aces to the nation’s No. 3 serving team. CSUN came into the match with 108 aces on the season (1.86 per set).
CSUN hit .352 for the match led by Greene’s 18 kills and nine by Dimitar Kalchev, who also had nine digs and one ace.
The Matadors jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead in Set 1 with a three-point spurt. Another 3-0 run gave them an 11-6 lead forcing UH head coach Charlie Wade to call an early timeout. CSUN led 19-11 with a block on Matautia and sided-out until the Warriors put together three straight points to pull within 23-17. The Matadors out-hit the Warriors, .379 to .194 in the set.
Van Tilburg had three early kills and Matautia’s first ace gave UH an 8-4 lead in Set 2. The lead was 11-6 after a CSUN hitting error before the Matadors slowly chipped away, tying it at 20-20 following hitting errors by Matautia and Rado Parapunov. The teams traded two-point spurts until a CSUN service error gave the Warriors set point at 24-23.
With a swing for the set, van Tilburg was blocked by Josiah Byers and Sam Porter. On the very next play, Porter teamed with Eric Chance to stuff van Tilburg again giving CSUN set point. Dalton Solbrig‘s attack failed to find the court as the Matadors took a 2-0 lead in the match.
CSUN held the advantage for the early part of Set 3 until the Warriors tied it at 19-19 after van Tilburg’s 16th kill. Moments later, a Greene kill coupled with a Matautia hitting error put the Matadors on top 22-20. CSUN managed to side out the rest of the way and put away the match on a kill by Chance.
