The Iowa State Cyclones fought back from a 0-2 deficit to take down Texas Tech in a close five-setter to improve to 2-1 in Big 12 play.

The first set started off with the Cyclones taking a lead but Texas Tech made a 10-1 run to go ahead 13-9. This, in response, sparked a 4-0 run in Iowa State to tie things up once again. The score was back and forth for the remainder of the set with Kylie Rittimann serving up an ace to end the first 27-25. After the score was tied up at 4-4, the Raiders went on a 4-0 run to go up 8-4 in the second set. This lead only continued to grow for Texas Tech as they took a 20-13 lead but the Cyclones went on a 5-1 run to lessen the lead to 21-18. Iowa State tried to fight back but the damage was done early as the Raiders closed out the set 25-23 and took the 2-0 advantage in the match.

The third set is when things turned around for the Cyclones despite there being 11 ties in the first half of the set. Texas Tech was the first to 15 points but then Iowa State pulled out a 6-0 to pull ahead 20-15 then Hannah Bailey blocked Katy Kennan to take the third set 25-19 off a .471 hitting percentage. The fourth set the Cyclones went ahead 9-6 early in the set but the Raiders were able to pull back within one at 15-14. Iowa State then pulled what they did in the third by going on a run to take a 22-16 lead over the Raiders. A Texas Tech error ended the set 25-21 and sent the set into a fifth set.

The Cyclones got off to a 4-1 run to start the fifth off a pair of Samara West kills. The Raiders tried to fight back but another 4-1 run brought Iowa State to an 11-7 lead before a Texas Tech 3-0 run brought it within one again. To end the set, the Cyclones went on a 4-2 run to close out the set and match 15-12.

West led the Cyclones in the match with 20 kills and seven blocks while Jess Schaben added another 17 kills and 15 digs for a double-double. The Cyclone effort was led by Samara West, who posted a career-high 20 kills and seven blocks. Jess Schaben had 17 kills and 15 digs, while Monique Harrishad her third-straight double-double with 43 assists and 12 digs. The ISU block got a season-high 15.0 blocks, led by nine from Grace LazardHali Hillegas recorded a career-best 34 digs.

First Set: Texas Tech 27 Iowa State 25
It was a set of runs for each team, with the Cyclones scoring the first four points of the match, Tech going on a 10-1 run to get ahead 13-9 and ISU responding with a four-point swing to even it back up at 13-13. Iowa State and Texas Tech both failed to convert their first set point chances, but Tech but it away on second asking with a Kylie Rittimann service ace to take it 27-25.

Second Set: Texas Tech 25 Iowa State 23
The Raiders went on a 4-0 run to break out to an 8-4 lead. The TTU block smothered the ISU attack early on, getting three blocks to help build to a 20-13 advantage. The Cyclones were able to rally late on, going on a 5-1 run to cut down the Tech advantage to 21-18. However, it was too much of a gap to close as Tech put away the set with a Katy Keenan kill at 25-23.

Third Set: Iowa State 25 Texas Tech 19
The frame started out as even as possible, with 11 of a possible 15 ties in the first half of the sets. However, it was once Tech reached 15 that things changed, as ISU unloaded a 6-0 run to pull ahead 20-15. The Cyclone offense clicked its way to a .471 hitting percentage for the set, continuing the match when Hannah Bailey stuffed Katy Kennan to take the third 25-19.

Fourth Set: Iowa State 25 Texas Tech 21
The Cyclone offense continued to assert itself, as their first seven swings went for kills to get ahead 9-6. The strong attack meant ISU sided out in an efficient manner, not allowing TTU to string together consecutive points until the home sides ninth and 10th points of the frame. Tech was able to pull back within one at 15-14, but like the third, that was when ISU made its move. The Cyclones bolted ahead to 22-16, and forced a fifth when Missy Owens sent her setter dump wide at 25-21.

Fifth Set: Iowa State 15 Texas Tech 12
The Cyclones broke out to a 4-1 lead via a pair of Samara West kills, Tech battled back to one on multiple occasions, but a 4-1 cyclone run, with the Cyclone block doing the damage, built the advantage up to four at 11-7. Tech fought back to within one again at 11-10, but ISU was able to stay ahead for good. Match point arrived at 14-12 when Sarah Redding fired wide, and was put away when Alexis Conaway fired off the block for the final kill at 15-12.

Katy Keenan pounded a career-high 16 kills on a .433 hitting percentage, and the Texas Tech volleyball team went the distance with No. 18 Iowa State before dropping a 3-2 decision (27-25, 25-23, 19-25, 21-25, 12-15) Friday in-front of a spirited 1,483 fans at the United Supermarkets Arena.

“We really played well in those first two sets, and I feel like we were able to digest enough to be able to slow their offense down so that we could score off of our serve,” Texas Tech head coach Tony Graystonesaid. “Third set, things really changed. Their ball control got really, really good. You could see how strong their offense is. I felt the fifth set was back and forth. I loved the fight that we showed. If you’re going to go down to a ranked team, that’s how you want to go down. You fight for every point and see the very best from both sides.”

Keenan reached double digit kills for the third time this season and for the first time since opening weekend. The .433 hitting clip was a best for Keenan against a Big 12 opponent since her freshman season when she knocked eight kills and .583 hitting ratio at Oklahoma on Oct. 28, 2015.

Missy Owens amassed career-highs with 55 assists and 20 digs en route to her second double-double of the season. The junior setter has handed out 107 assists at an 11.89 per set mark over her last two matches.

Texas Tech’s (12-4, 1-2 Big 12) outside attack of Emily HillSarah Redding and Chandler Atwood each recorded 10-plus kills. Hill came away with 14 kills and 10 digs to claim her fifth double-double and reached double figure kills in seven of her last eight matches.

Redding tagged 14 kills and added three blocks, while Atwood cranked 11 kills and three blocks. Atwood has powered home 10-plus kills in all three Big 12 matches on the season.

Allison White chipped in six kills and six blocks. She has registered five or more blocks on five occasions which includes two of her three Big 12 matches.

Kate Klepetka sprawled out for 21 digs to anchor the back row for the Red Raiders. She was filling the libero positon for injured Reyn Akiu, an All-Big 12 Preseason pick.

“That was part of the game plan,” Graystone said. “We knew that Iowa State likes to throw balls at the setter and take their opponent out of being able to run their offense. We knew Missy was going to get a lot of work of the defensive side, and she was up for it.”

The Cyclones (11-2, 2-1 Big 12) raced out to an early 8-3 advantage in set one, but Texas Tech found its rhythm with 10 of the next 11 points to surge ahead 13-9. Atwood, Hill and Keenan ignited the spurt with consecutive kills. Then, the Red Raiders forced Iowa State into four attacking errors sparked by an Owens-White block. All square at 25-25, Texas Tech connected a Keenan kill on a rip play through the middle and a Kylie Rittimannace to close out the 27-25 decision.

The Red Raiders took that momentum into the second set and built a 14-9 edge after a Redding kill and an Atwood solo block. Texas Tech stretched the margin to 20-13, but the Cyclones nearly wiped away the deficit. Up 24-23, the Red Raiders answered the bell behind Keenan who tooled the block on a slide kill down the line to give the Red Raiders a two-set advantage.

Iowa State claimed sets three and four by 25-19 and 25-21 margins, respectively. The Cyclones hammered 33 kills on a .484 hitting percentage and converted on 31 of their 41 sideout attempts to draw even. Jess Schaben and Samara West combined to provide 18 of their 37 kills to fuel the ISU attack. West finished with 20 kills and seven blocks whereas Shaben notched 17 kills and 15 digs for the Cyclones.

The winner-take-all fifth stanza started with an Owens ace. However, Iowa State answered with four quick points and maintained the four-point spread at 11-7. The Red Raiders rallied behind back-to-back Hill kills. Then, Hill paired with White for a block on Schaben to make it 11-10. The two teams traded four sideouts before Iowa State forced a Redding attacking error coupled with an Alexis Conaway kill for the final margin of 15-12.

“Just for us to stand across the net from a team of that caliber and know were right there (is a positive),” Graystone said. “We were three points away from knocking off a ranked team. Those are important steps for our team to take away. We keep saying that the more times were in these situations the better were going to be. I thought Katy Keenan was spectacular tonight. Offensively, I think our block held its own. We were still making plays, and I thought it was a good all-around match.”
