#7 San Diego Opens WCC Play With 3-0 Sweep of San Francisco

The 7th-ranked San Diego Torreros moved to 49-18 all-time against West Coast Conference (WCC) opponents San Francisco on Thursday thanks to a 3-0 sweep to open conference play. The match served a s a tuneup for Saturday’s WCC showdown against formerly-ranked, though recently-spiraling, Santa Clara University.

It was a balanced attack for the Torreros, with 9 different players recording kills on the match – their most diverse offense of the season – with 13 total players seeing action on the evening. The closest anyone came to breaking double digits for San Diego was Lisa Kramer, who had 9 kills and just 1 error on 14 attacks for an efficient .571 hitting percentage. Lauren Fuller had 6 kills of her own to go with 3 service aces.

San Francisco, on the other hand, had just three players score on spikes, though two of them reached 10 kills each – Emily Reed and Tyna Adamcikova. Adamcikova added 6 kills and the team’s lone ace to her stat-line for the night.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of San Diego women’s volleyball team cruised its way to a 3-0 win over the University of San Francisco, in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams, Thursday evening at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

With the 25-16, 25-16, 25-7 win, the Toreros improve to 10-2 overall, move to 1-0 in the WCC and have extended their winning streak to nine. With the loss, the Dons fall to 4-10 overall, and 0-1 in the WCC.

Lisa Kramer paced a balanced offense this evening for San Diego with nine kills, while hitting .571.Lauren Schad added in seven more kills, whileLauren Fuller, Jayden Kennedy and Merve Tanyel all had six kills apiece. Kristen Gengenbacher and Anna Newsome each had 16 assists, and Hunter Jenningsled the defense with 11 digs.

As a team, USD hit for a season-high .427 clip, while the Dons hit .099. USD recorded 35 digs, while USF only had 22 digs. The Dons narrowly out blocked USD, 3.0-2.0.

For San Francisco, Emily Reed and Tyna Adamcikova each had a match-best 10 kills, while Shannon Levinson had 13 assists and Kim Gutierrez had nine digs.

The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they welcome Santa Clara University to the Jenny Craig Pavilion for a 12 p.m. WCC match.

AN DIEGO, Calif.– In the season’s conference opener, USF women’s volleyball traveled down south to face off against No. 7 San Diego, and eventually dropped the match in straight sets (25-16, 25-16, 25-7).

San Francisco (4-10, 0-1 WCC) recorded just 24 kills in the game, with Emily Reed andTyna Adamcikova each totaling 10 kills. Freshman Shannon Levinson‘s streak of double-digit assists continued with a team-high 13 assists while Trish Koutsoukos recorded nine. Junior libero Kim Gutierrez finished the game with nine digs. For the Toreros (10-2, 1-0 WCC), a balanced, efficient attack paved the way as USD hit .427 for a total of 41 kills.

After dropping the first game, USF battled hard in an attempt to tie the match at a set apiece. The Dons hit 10 kills in the second frame- the most out of any set for USF. For the set, Adamcikova hit five of her total kills, while Reed hit four.

USF will have a quick turnaround, as the young squad will now travel to Provo, Utah to take on No. 13 BYU. The match against the Cougars is slated for Saturday, Sept. 24 at 12 p.m. and will broadcast live on The W.TV.
