After a dramatic strengthening of Hurricane Irma that has made it one of the biggest and windiest storms in history, combined with an updated track that has it travelling squarely through the heart of Florida (and Gainesville), this weekend’s scheduled match between #18 Michigan State and #1 Florida has been cancelled. The showdown was originally announced to be the only surviving match of this weekend’s Active Ankle challenge that was due to include UNC Greensboro and American University as well.
Michigan State’s original plan was to play the match and then quickly return to the airport to fly out the same night.
After the cancellation, the Spartans’ next matches will come at the Notre Dame Shamrock Invitational, where they’ll play Notre Dame, Central Michigan, and Southern Illinois. That will be their last tournament before opening up Big Ten play against Wisconsin and Minnesota on September 22nd and 24th.
Florida is scheduled to return to the court with an intra-state rivalry match against Florida State on Tuesday, though that could be impacted by the aftermath of Hurricane Irma as well.
