2018 FIVB World Tour – Montpellier

The first FIVB tournament champions of the 2018 World Tour are Slovenians Jan Pokersnik and Nejc Zemljak. This is the first ever major competition medal for the pair, although they have won five CEV and national titles over the years, most recently the CEV Satellite-Vaduz in August.

The Slovenians edged out Czech duo Ondrej Perusic and David Schweiner 26-24 in the opening set, then cruised to a 21-14 Set 2 win en route to the title.

Three-set matches were the order of the day as the podium spots were decided at the Montpellier Open on Saturday, save the championship match.

First up in the semifinals, Zemljak/Pokersnik topped Serbian qualifiers Lazar Kolaric and Djordje Klasnic after dropping the opening set.

Perusic/Schweiner followed suit with a three-set win over France’s Youssef Krou and Quincy Aye, with the largest margin of victory being three points.

In the medal matches, Kolaric/Klasnic’s run fell just short of earning the bronze as the duo were edged by Krou/Aye.

Zemljak/Pokersnik and Perusic/Schweiner then faced off in a barnburner for the gold.

All four semifinal and final matches were streamed live on the FIVB’s youtube channel, via the link above.
