The UCLA Bruins took down Loyola Marymount in three sets using just seven players the entire match.
The match started close with five ties and four lead changes before UCLA took the 11-8 lead and went on a 6-1 run to take the largest lead of the set at 17-9. Loyola made a small advance at turning things around but was stopped by the Bruins at 25-19.
UCLA never trailed in the second set, despite two ties. The Bruins went up 8-3, with that three to five point lead maintained until Loyola made a small comeback at 16-15. At this point, the Bruins went on a 9-3 run to conclude the set with Jenny Mosser, Kyra Rogers and Sarah Sponcil kills.
In the third set, UCLA trailed Loyola at 11-8, but a 10-1 run by the Bruins put them up by six. UCLA kept this lead for the remainder of the set before taking the match 25-19.
As a whole, UCLA hit .363 in the match while holding Loyola to .156.
Leading the Bruins was Sponcil with a double-double of 33 assists and 13 digs to mark four on the year. In addition, Sponcil added three kills on a .600 hitting clip and two blocks. Reily Buechler and Mosser each contributed 11 kills in the win, both hitting over .400. Buechler added five digs and four blocks to her tally while Mosser picked up eight digs and two blocks. Madeleine Gates slammed down nine kills on a .438 hitting clip while also adding five blocks into the mix.
For Loyola, Sara Kovac and Megan Rice each put down seven kills in the loss.

Senior Sarah Sponcil recorded her team-best fourth double-double of the season with 33 assists and 13 digs, while senior Reily Buechler and freshman Jenny Mosser each had a match-high 11 kills, as the 13th-ranked Bruins swept Loyola Marymount on Wednesday at the John Wooden Center. Set scores were 25-19, 25-18, 25-19.
Buechler hit .409 with five digs and four blocks, while Mosser swung at a .421 clip with eight digs. The Bruins hit a season-best .363 as a team. Sophomore Madeleine Gates added nine kills and five blocks, freshman Mac May had six kills and four digs, junior Kyra Rogers notched five kills and sophomore Savvy Simo tallied eight assists and seven digs.
After five ties and four lead changes early in set one, the Bruins pulled away to take the opener. At 11-8 UCLA, the home team scored six of seven to take a set-best lead of eight at 17-9. Buechler, Mosser and Rogers all had kills, Buechler and Rogers teamed up for a block and Loyola Marymount made a pair of errors.
LMU would get to within three at 21-18, but could get no closer, as a 4-1 run to end the set on two Mosser kills and two Lion errors gave the Bruins the 25-19 victory. Gates was 4-for-5 with no errors in the opening stanza, while Mosser also had four kills. Sponcil added six digs, while Simo posted four. The Bruins out-hit the Lions .385 to .147.
Despite two ties, the Bruins never trailed in set two. After four sideouts to start, the Bruins scored six of seven to go ahead 8-3. Gates had a kill and teamed up on blocks with Buechler and Mosser, Buechler and Sponcil added kills and LMU had an error. The Bruins’ lead remained between three and five until a late run by the Lions cut the deficit to 16-15.
From there, the Bruins scored six in a row on kills by Mosser, Rogers and Sponcil and three LMU errors. UCLA went on to win the second by a score of 25-18. Buechler (3-for-8), Rogers (3-for-6) and Sponcil (3-for-3) were all error-free in the second, while Mosser added three kills and three digs, with six different players recording at least two kills. Gates had three blocks, as the Bruins out-hit the Lions .342 to .222.
The Bruins were down a few for the early part of set three, but came on in the middle and finished off the sweep. Down 11-8, a 10-1 Bruin run put them up by half a dozen. Mosser had two kills and an ace, Buechler posted two kills and a combo block with Rogers, May added a kill and LMU made three errors.
UCLA’s lead stayed above three for the rest of the set, as an attack error on the Bruins’ first match point wrapped up a 25-19 victory. Buechler led the third with six kills, Mosser added four kills and four digs and Gates and May each posted three kills. The Bruins out-hit the Lions .370 to .077.

#13 UCLA (6-2) hit .370 over the course of a 25-19, 25-18, 25-19 sweep of LMU (5-4) on Wednesday night from the Wooden Center on the campus of UCLA. LMU managed just a .156 hitting percentage of its own, but did serve up five aces in the loss.
Sophomore Tess Reidcontributed two of LMU’s five aces, while also dishing out 11 assists. Fellow setter Jessie Prichard also had an ace while managing 12 assists and nine digs to narrowly miss a double-double. Megan Rice and Sara Kovac led the Lion attack with seven kills, while Savannah Slattery finished with six kills, an ace and four digs.
“I thought our setters served well and played good defense, besides that we executed every other skill well below our standard,” first year head coach Aaron Mansfield said. “We will learn from it and figure out how we can play LMU volleyball because we were far from it tonight.”
Jenny Mosser and Reily Buechler led all players with 11 kills, as both hit better than .400 at .421 and .409, respectively. Madeleine Gates had the best all-around match for the Bruins, connecting for a .438 clip while registering nine kills and five block assists to guide the Bruins to eight team blocks. UCLA’s strong attack was set by former Lion Sarah Sponcil, who notched 33 assists and posted 13 digs for a double-double.
LMU will travel to the East Coast to finish the non-conference schedule this week, taking on #24 North Carolina on Friday at 4 p.m. PT before visiting Duke on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. PT.
