SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal Poly made short work of Cal State Fullerton on Friday, hitting at a .477 and doubling up on the Titans 50-25 in kills.
The Mustangs hit .542 with just one error in Set 1, followed with a .400 effort in Set 2 and rounded things out with a .517 Set 3 performance. Cal Poly committed just eight hitting errors in the match.
Sophomore outside hitter Torrey Van Winden notched 13 kills with no errors in 21 swings for a .619 effort only to be outshined by senior outside Raeann Greisen, who hit at an .833 clip with 10 kills in 12 errorless swings. Junior outside Adlee Van Winden also posted double-digit kills with 11. Senior middle blocker Savannah Niemann was tops on the team with five blocks, while junior libero Katherine Brouker paced the backcourt with 15 digs.
Junior middle Summer Kerins posted a team-best six kills, while hitting .333 for the Titans. Sophomore middle Aniya Henry added three kills and a team-leading two blocks, while redshirt junior outside hitter Shimen Fayad managed seven digs and two kills.
Cal Poly ran out to an 11-6 lead to start the match with help from three Fullerton miscues and three Greisen kills. Fullerton was within four at 16-12, but the Mustangs ran away with the set, closing it out on a 9-0 run. Four different players tallied kills in the final stretch, which also included a Brouker ace and a set-ending solo stuff by Taylor Nelson.
Fullerton scored the first two points of Set 2, but soon found itself behind 9-6. A kill and a block by Jayla Norman knotted the score at 9-all, before Cal Poly pulled away. The Mustangs scored 15 of the next 19 to earn a set-point try at 24-13. Four Torrey Van Winden kills led the way, while seven different players notched putaways in the stretch. Kills by Meagan Carlson and Henry kept Fullerton alive, before a hitting error capped the set at 25-16 for Cal Poly.
In a blink, Set 3 was 14-4 in favor of the Mustangs thanks in part to a 9-1 run, including two kills each by Adlee Van Winden, Greisen and Taylor Nelson. The Titans would get no closer than eight the rest of the way as the teams traded points. Up 20-12, Cal Poly notched five of the final six points to close out the match. A stuff by Torrey Van Winden and Niemen wrapped up the sweep.

Sophomore outside hitter Torrey Van Winden finished with a team-high 13 kills, hitting .619 as Cal Poly swept Cal State Fullerton (25-12, 25-16, 25-13) Friday night at Mott Athletics Center in the team’s first home match of the season.
The Mustangs (12-2, 2-0) overpowered the Titans (4-10, 0-2) hitting .477 for the match as team while limiting Cal State Fullerton to a .054 hitting percentage.
“It was great to finally be back at home and playing in front of all of the students, fans, and supporters of Cal Poly Volleyball,” head coach Sam Crosson said. “The gym had a great electricity about it and it is always a great time when the Mustang Band is present, one of the great traditions of Cal Poly.”
Cal Poly came out strong in the first set, getting out to a 13-7 lead and never looking back as they finished the set on a 12-5 run. They hit .542 for the set, their highest hitting percentage set of the match while only committing one attack error.
The second set was back-and-forth early on until the Mustangs, up 10-9, went on a 9-1 run and would go on to win the set 25-16. Torrey Van Winden posted six of her 13 kills in the second set alone.
Cal Poly kept its foot on the gas pedal in the third set, quickly getting out to a 14-4 lead before going on to finish it out 25-13.
“Tonight was a good team effort, Taylor did a nice job of distributing the ball and getting our attackers some good opportunities to be successful,” Crosson said. “Raeann had another terminal night offensively and was able to show improvement with her block moves at the net.”
Senior setter Taylor Nelson led the Mustangs in assists with 35 to go along with seven digs. Junior outside hitter Adlee Van Winden added 11 kills and senior outside hitter Raeann Greisen finished with 10 kills, hitting .833 and posted two blocks.
For the third time this season, all 13 Mustang players played in the match.
“Overall we had a good rhythm with our group,” Crosson said. “We certainly have some areas of the game that we can be better at and the group is looking forward to another opportunity tomorrow to compete versus UC Riverside.”
Cal Poly returns to Mott Athletics Center Saturday at 4:30 p.m. to face UC Riverside (8-6, 0-2).
Saturday’s game against the Highlanders is the first “Double-Up Saturday,” meaning fans who show their ticket to the Cal Poly football game later that night get free admission for the volleyball match.

Cal Poly proved why it’s considered one of the best squads in the Big West, as the Mustangs defeated the Titans 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-13), Friday night inside the Mott Athletics Center.For Fullerton (4-10, 0-2 Big West), the match was the first conference road test of the season and just the Titans fourth three-set loss of the season.
Summer Kerins led the Titans in kills for the first time this year, as she recorded six kills in the match. On the other end of the court Shimen Fayad led Fullerton with seven digs.
Cal Poly (12-2, 2-0) fired on all cylinders early, cruising to a 25-12 first set victory, as it hit .542 for the set. Fullerton picked things up in the second set, hitting a match high .161, but it wasn’t enough as the Mustangs prevailed, winning the second set 25-16.
Cal Poly then finished things off with a 25-13 third set victory.
The Titans will be back in action tomorrow, as they’ll take on UC Santa Barbara at 7 pm PT inside the Thunderdome.
