On the final day of pool play in the Women’s African Volleyball Championship in Yaounde, Cameroon, there was one spot remaining in the final round between Senegal, Nigeria and Tunisia in Pool B. While in Pool A, the winner of the Cameroon vs. Egypt match would win the pool and then face that final team in the semifinals on Friday the 13th. Kenya had already won pool B and would face the loser of the Cameroon vs. Egypt match on Friday as well.
Tunisia was playing DR Congo in their final match, needed to win in three sets to stay alive and hope that Nigeria and Senegal would go four sets. Tunisia took care of their business with a comfortable 3-0 win.
Senegal needed only to win two sets to advance to the semifinals. While Nigeria needed to win in 3 sets after Tunisia’s win. In a tight first set, Senegal won 25-23. The second set was a little easier for Senegal taking it 25-20 and clinching their spot in the semifinals. Senegal won the 3rd set by a similar score to win the match.
In the final match of the day Cameroon and Egypt played a hard fought match, in which the host country won 3-1 giving them the pool win and facing Senegal on Friday. Egypt will face Kenya in the other semifinal. The winners of these semifinals will be the two CAVB representatives for the 2018 FIVB Women’s World Championship in Japan.
