Melissa Ferris has resigned after 2 seasons as the head volleyball coach at William & Mary. She leaves with a 13-46 record, including a 4-28 finish in CAA conference play.
“Melissa has chosen to pursue other opportunities,” stated W&M’s Director of Athletics, Samantha K. Huge. “We wish her the best moving forward.”
After nearly 20 years as an assistant in Division I volleyball, including 12 seasons as associate head coach at Rice, Ferris arrived in Williamsburg in 2016.
The program is the CAA’s all-time leader with 8 conference titles. They also have 7 conference players of the year, 4 CAA Defensive Players of the Year, and 4 CAA Rookies of the Year.
In 2017, William & Mary finished in last place in the CAA with a 2-14 conference record (5-25 overall); in 2016, they finished 2-14 and in last place in the CAA as well, with an 8-21 overall record.
Sydney Biniak earned two 3rd Team All-CAA honors during Ferris’ tenure.
Before her 12 years at Rice, Biniak spent 2 years at Wyoming and 4 years at Texas State. She played collegiately at Arizona, where she ranks in the top 10 in school history in kills and solo blocks.
The school has begun a “national search” for a new head coach. Assistant coach Shannon Thompson will oversee the program during the transition.
