Venezuelan National Team Captain Kervin Piñuera Dies at 25

Venezuelan men’s National Team captain Kervin Piñuera has died at 25 years old. The Venezuelan Volleyball Federation announced the passing on their social media channels, and sport around the world extended their condolences in the aftermath.

Born on February 22, 1991, the 6’3″ opposite from Caracas passed away on Friday in Ankara, Turkey after suffering a heart attack. He was in Turkey competing for his club team Afyonkarahisar in Turkey’s top league. He led his Venezuelan team to gold at the 2011 Junior Pan-American Cup where he was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. He had also been a member of Venezuela’s senior National Team for 6 year, where he helped win a bronze a the 2011 South American Championship and was named as the best server of the championship.

At the club level, he had played in Argentina, Turkey, Italy, Slovakia, and Lebanon.

“It is unfortunate news that we must report, our captain (Kervin Piñuera) has died after suffering a heart attack in Turkey,” the Venezuelan Federation said on their Instagram account. “World Volleyball is in mourning.”

In his last match before his passing, he was the top scorer with 25 points in Afyonkarahisar in their 3-2 win over Fenrbahce Istanbul on Saturday.
