After recently suffering yet another season ending ACL injury, Modena‘s 34-year-old Raffaella Calloni has decided to retire from the sport. The Italian national teamer, who played in 13 A1 seasons, penned an emotional note to fans in her personal Instagram page:
“After months of reflection I decided to “hang the knee pads on the nail”. From now on, I will not be a volleyball player anymore. Starting tomorrow, I will start my new life as an adult. Now I want to spend a few words for those who have been able to make these years a fantastic adventure.
Starting with my coaches. Thank you all! Even to those with whom I have not had a great relationship. Each of you left me something and helped me to grow technically and personally […] Thanks to all the teams that chose to work with me. You made it possible to turn my passion into a profession […] Thanks to all the fans, you have never made me miss your support, you have become friends and real families for me. I love you so much!
Thanks to my agent Pauline. You are number 1! You have been a patient, capable and fun guide. I do not know how I would have done ti without you!
Thanks to all my friends. To those who helped me and those who hurt me. To those who were just passing through and to those who are still walking by my side. You have been the most important part of this journey and the most exceptional tool to grow and evolve. Thank you! […] Thanks to my family and my love. Without you I would not have been able to do all this.”
A very competent middle blocker who served Italy’s NT for 10 years, Calloni was elected A1’s best at her position twice (2013 and 2015).
