Creighton freshman libero Brittany Witt “remains in good spirits” on Monday, the school said in a press release this afternoon. Witt was forced to leave the 3rd set of Creighton’s 0-3 loss on Saturday to Texas in the Elite 8 (or regional finals) of the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship.
Witt, a native of Omaha (where Creighton is located), took a knee to the face from teammate Jaali Winters in the game. She suffered a broken nose, orbital fraction, and a laceration above her eye in the collision but said she’s not in much pain.
“I was diving for the ball and as I was going to get up, Jaali (Winters) was turning around to play it and she kneed me in the face,” said Witt. “After that I couldn’t see, so I stayed on the ground to get help walking out. I do have a broken nose, an orbital fracture and a laceration above my eye. But I will be OK, and there’s not much pain…just a little bit of swelling.”
Witt was able to return back to Omaha with her team on Sunday.
Witt played in all 128 sets for Creighton in her freshman season and averaged 4.09 digs/set on the season. She really racheted up her play in the NCAA tournament, with a career-high 32 in the team’s opening round game against Northern Iowa, then 21 against Kansas, 19 against Michigan, and 7 against Texas before having to leave the game.
Witt posted a photo of the aftermath on her Twitter account on Saturday. She was using a filter from the social media network Snapchat that adds a dog ear, nose, and tongue to her face, but the status of her eye shone through.
