Germand Bundesliga club VC Wiesbaden has announced in its official website the signing of Alexis Matthews to its roster. The 6’3″ 27-year-old middle blocker is transferring out of Philippines’ Cignal HD Spikers after having also enjoyed stints in Romania and Finland.
Matthews graduated from Michigan State in 2013 as an AVCA All-Honorable mention All-American. She left the school as the program’s all-time and single-season leader in block assists and 2nd best at hitting percentage and total blocks. At her new team, she’ll be filling up for Simona Kóšová, who is currently recovering from a knee injury, and Valentina Zaloznik, who is taking some time off to graduate college.
Here is how the team’s coach Dirk Groß reacted to the signing:
“We were looking for a player who already has a lot of experience, height and good athleticism. All this is the case with Alexis. She is fat, dynamic and a great blocker. With her, we have definitely improved our team. We want to give Simona the time she needs to fully heal her knee. We are also very glad for the time Valentina spent with us. She has enriched us with her volleyball and personality in the past few weeks in training. Our doors are always open for her.”
At Wiesbaden, Jennifer will join a team that finished its 2017/18 Bundesliga campaing in 4th place, with a 13-7 record, before falling in the playoffs in the Round of 8. She’ll be joined fellow American teammate Jennifer Hamson, who has recently left the WNBA to resume her volleyball career.
