Colorado State, Fresno State Need Four, Utah State Wins in Five

On Thursday night, Colorado State took over the top spot in the Mountain West with a four set win against San Diego State. The Rams take control after Fresno State took down Wyoming in four sets. Elsewhere, Boise State swept Nevada on the road and Utah State eliminated a two set deficit to beat San Jose State in five on the road to earn the first conference win for the Aggies.

UTAH STATE DEF. SAN JOSE STATE 3-2(19-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-16, 15-12)

  • Utah State moves to 3-11, 1-2; San Jose State falls to 5-7, 0-3 in the MW.

  • Utah State used a balanced offensive attack to get the win over San Jose State. Opposite side hitter Izzie Hinton-Belnap and outside hitter Gabbi Shumway finished with 10 kills, middle blocker Corinne Larsen chipped in with nine, and fellow middle blockers Bailey Downing and Lauren O’Brien each added eight kills.
  • For San Jose State, it was outside hitter Latahevai  Louisi, who led the way with 22 kills. Outside hitters Caitlin Bettenay and Fernanda Vido each had double-doubles for the the Spartans. Bettenay finished with 14 kills and 13 digs while Vido added 13 kills and 12 digs.
  • San Jose State hit .317 and .308 in the two sets it won and .182, .000, and .125 in the three sets it lost. Utah State hit .235 for the match and managed to win the fifth despite only hitting .154.

Utah State delivered a five set stunner on the road against San Jose State Thursday night. The Aggies overcame a two set deficit to grab their first conference win and send the Spartans home with a missed opportunity.

The match started well for San Jose State. The Spartans used a 6-2 spurt midway through the first set to grab a 20-15 lead before going on to close out Utah State, 25-19. The second set followed the same script as the Spartans used an 8-2 run to go in front 19-14. San Jose State finished off the Aggies 25-19 for a two set lead.

In the third, Utah State found its rhythm and got itself back in the match. The Aggies grabbed their first lead at 9-8 and used a 7-2 spurt to take control at 19-13. Utah State closed out the set, 25-20. Then in the fourth set, the Aggies snagged the first point and never looked back in evening the match with a 25-16 victory to force a fifth set.

Utah State jumped out in front 7-3 in the fifth, but San Jose State charged back to take the lead at 9-8. The Aggies countered the Spartans’ run with a 5-1 lead to go back in front 13-10. San Jose State would manage two more points before Utah State pulled out the 15-12 win.

COLORADO STATE DEF. SAN DIEGO STATE 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-22)

  • Colorado State improves to 11-4, 3-0; San Diego State falls to 1-14, 0-3 in the Mountain West.

  • Outside hitter Breana Runnels led Colorado State with 17 kills and eight digs. Middle blocker Kirstie Hillyer registered 12 kills, eight blocks, and hit .611.
  • San Diego State had three players finish with double digit kills: Outside hitter Ashlynn Dunbar (12), middle blocker Erin Gillcrist (12), and outside hitter Hannah Turnlund (11). Dunbar added 11 digs.
  • Colorado State hit .291 as a team while limiting the Aztecs to .097.

BOISE STATE DEF. NEVADA 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-19)

  • Boise State improves to 10-4, 2-1; Nevada drops to 7-7, 0-3

  • Outside hitter Sabryn Roberts led the Broncos with 11 kills while hitting .333. Fellow outside hitter Janell Walley added eight kills and led the defensive effort with 13 digs.
  • Outside hitters Kayla Afoa and Camryn Rocha each had seven kills for the Wolfpack.
  • Boise State converted 36 of its 97 attacks, good for .247. Nevada converted 28 of 107, a .084 clip.
  • The Broncos had a big advantage at the net, out-blocking Nevada 9-1.

 FRESNO STATE DEF. WYOMING 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-19, 25-21)

  • Fresno State moves to 10-5, 2-0; Wyoming falls to 10-5, 2-1 in the MW.

  • Outside hitters Taylor Slover and Aubrey Folk paced Fresno State with 14 kills each. Middle blocker Haile Watson added 13 and outside hitter Jessica Gilbert registered 11 kills. Slover added a team-high 19 digs as well.
  • Outside hitter Emily Lewis led Wyoming with 14 kills while fellow outside hitter Halie McArdle tallied 12. Defensive specialist Madi Fields delivered a match-high 25 digs for the Cowgirls.
  • The Bulldogs hit .243 while limiting the Cowgirls to .173.
