Wyoming Holds Home Court with 3-1 Win vs. Colorado State

Colorado State never found its offensive footing, committing 30 hitting errors, partially due to 13 Wyoming blocks, in a four-set loss on Tuesday.

The Cowgirls trailed the Rams 50-44 in kills, but boasted a .284 to .144 advantage in efficiency, a 7-5 lead in aces and a 13-7 edge in blocks.

Wyoming started the match on a .333 clip and ended the evening with a .448 effort, with just one error. CSU did not hit above  .200 in any of the four sets, falling as low as .029 in Set 3.

Jackie McBride led a balanced attack for Wyoming, posting 10 kills on a .450 hitting effort to go with nine blocks. Five other players added five or more putaways: Faith Waitsman (9), Reed Copeland (7), Tara Traphagan (7), Halie McArdle (5) and Emily Lewis (5). Copeland and Traphagan also hit .400 or better, checking at .400 and .429 respectively, and each added three blocks.

Three Rams players managed double-digit kill efforts: Breana Runnels (17), Paulina Hougaard-Jensen (15) and Kirstie Hillyer (10). Hougaard-Jensen hit at a team-best .370 clip, while Hillyer put up a team-leading five blocks.

Set 1 featured six ties last at 17 before Wyoming pulled away to take the stanza. Four Colorado State miscues down the stretch aided the final 8-2 push.

The Rams broke away midway through Set 2, snapping a 12-all tie with a 6-2 run, including two kills each by Runnels and Hougaard-Jensen. Wyoming called timeout, but could not slow CSU, which knotted the match with seven of the final 11 points. Hillyer scored the last two points on kills.

Wyoming ran away with Set 3, racing out to a 7-3 lead en route to a 17-7 advantage. Five Ram errors and three blocks aided the Cowgirls. CSU pulled within seven at 18-11, but Wyoming ended the set with three straight points, capped by a Madi Fields ace.

After kicking off Set 4 on a 5-0 run, Wyoming got three kills apiece from Lewis and Waitsman to jump ahead 13-7. Colorado State countered with six of the next eight points to narrow the gap to two at 15-13, including two Hougaard-Jensen kills and a Sasha Colombo ace. Wyoming called timeout and wrapped up the match on a 10-5 run. Two CSU hitting errors and a block by McBride and Waitsman sewed up the win.
