In the latest edition of a series of exhibition matches between the best collegiate teams in the United States against the best collegiate teams in Canada, American #6 Pepperdine downed Canadian #2 McMaster University on Friday, marking their second lost to the Wave in as many nights after falling 3-2 on Thursday.
After sweeping the top-ranked American team Ohio State to open their U.S. tour, McMaster has lost the next 3 games they’ve played, and will now travel back to more familiar territory with a game against Guelph on January 14th.
The final score of Friday’s game was more dominant than was the one the night before for Pepperdine, although statistically they were much less dominant. On Thursday, Pepperdine held McMaster to just a .139 hitting percentage, thanks in large part to 12.5 blocks. On Saturday, Pepperdine had only 7 blocks and let McMaster hit .200, had fewer aces, and roughly the same offensive hitting percentage (.209 vs. .205).
The biggest difference was that Pepperdine was able to keep the number of service and blocking errors down, with just 11 and 2, respectively, on Friday, as compared to 17 and 5 a night earlier.
The Waves had three players with double-digit kills, led by Noah Dyer (13 kills, 4 errors, 34 total attempts, .265), and Mitchell Penning (10 kills, 2 errors, 15 attacks, .533 percentage). They also got 14 digs from libero Owen Yoshimoto, which is more than the 12 he had combined in the team’s previous two matches this season.
McMaster was led by Jayson McCarthy, who hit .226 with 11 kills.
