Kloth, Higareda, Barnes Garner Big East Week 13 Accolades

NEW YORK – The final BIG EAST Volleyball weekly awards of 2018 have been given to Creighton’s Taryn Kloth who receives the Offensive Player of the Week, while Georgetown’s Kenzie Higareda collects the Defensive Player of the Week honor. Sanaä Barnes of Villanova picks up the Freshman of the Week accolade. This is the second award of the season for Kloth and the first for both Higareda and Barnes.

BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week

Taryn Kloth, Creighton, Sr., OH (Sioux Falls, S.D.)

Kloth helped the Bluejays sweep Providence in two home matches to secure a fifth consecutive outright BIG EAST Volleyball regular-season title. She averaged 4.50 kills and 4.83 points per set to rank second in the BIG EAST last week, while hitting .458. In Creighton’s first match against Providence she totaled a match-high 14 kills and five digs, then followed that with another match-high 13 kills and a pair of digs and aces in Match 2.

BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week

Kenzie Higareda, Georgetown, Sr., L (Woodbridge, Va.)

Higareda guided the Hoyas over the weekend as they swept Xavier and Butler at home, averaging 4.83 digs per set, which was fourth-best in the league. Against Xavier she tied a match-best 14 digs along with two aces, and had another match-high 15 digs and one ace versus Butler. She helped hold Georgetown’s opponents to a league-best .026 hitting. Higareda finished her career with a school-record 1,990 total digs.

BIG EAST Freshman of the Week

Sanaä Barnes, Villanova, Fr., RS (Keller, Texas)

Barnes was a key factor in helping the Wildcats secure the final spot in the BIG EAST Volleyball Championship presented by Jeep this past weekend. She averaged 3.17 points and 3.00 kills per set. She had seven kills in a sweep of Butler, and tied a match-high 11 kills with two digs and two blocks in a sweep of Xavier.

BIG EAST Honor Roll

Alyssa Sinnette, Georgetown, Sr., OH (Pearland, Texas)

Sinnette helped the Hoyas defeat visitng Xavier and Butler both in straight sets over the past weekend. She averaged 4.58 points and 3.83 kills per set. Sinnette collected a match-high 13 kills against Xavier, while adding seven digs. She then recorded a double-double by tying for a match-best 10 kills along with 10 digs.

Jenna Rosenthal, Marquette, R-Sr., MH (Fond du Lac, Wis.)

Rosenthal hit a league second-best .571 and averaged 4.00 kills in just one match as the Golden Eagles swept third-place St. John’s. She contributed a match-high 12 kills along with three blocks and a dig in the match.

Abby Thelen, Seton Hall, Sr., OH (Mitchell, Ky.)

Thelen dominated in the Pirates’ sweep of DePaul over the weekend. She hit a league-high .647, which is the best attack percentage in a conference match this season. Thelen also led the league in kills and points per set at 7.66 and 8.50, respectively. She acquired a match-high 23 kills, which is the most for any player in a three-set conference match this season.

Regan Lough, Villanova, Jr., L (Riverside, Calif.)

Lough guided the defense for Villanova as it claimed a spot in the BIG EAST Volleyball Championship. She averaged a league second-best 5.00 digs per set over the weekend. Lough recorded a match-high 19 digs versus Butler, and she added 11 digs against Xavier.

Laura Grossman, Xavier, Sr., OH (San Juan, Puerto Rico)

Grossman was second in the league this past weekend in digs per set averaging 5.00. She helped the Musketeers offensively with a team-high eight kills at Georgetown and seven at Villanova. On the defensive side Grossman tallied a team-high 13 digs and three blocks versus the Hoyas and 17 digs against Villanova.
