The Brazilians got quite the hometown show in the men’s tournament as Bruno Schmidt and Alison Cerutti managed to defeat Italians Daniele Lupo and Paolo Nicolai in the final match in order to claim the gold medal in front of a home crowd. The Italians grabbed the silver, the Dutch the bronze.
The second Brazilian pair tied for ninth overall despite going into the tournament as the fourth seed.
The women’s tournament ended up being just as exciting as the men’s, and also featured a Brazilian team competing for gold in the final. Despite their efforts, they weren’t able to finish on top of the podium, and instead, Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas settled for silver behind the Germans.
Larissa Franca and Talita Antunes, the other Brazilian pair, lost to the Americans in the bronze medal game.
