Two of the top 3 teams in the land were in action on the sand on Wednesday, and both extended historic winning streaks with a pair of victories.
For #2 Pepperdine, they now have 14-straight victories and move to a 15-1 overall record after sweeping #5 Long Beach State and formerly-ranked Grand Canyon. The games were the team’s last two on their home courts at Zuma Beach. The Waves are now 7-1 against nationally-ranked opponents this season, with the lone loss coming to consensus #1 and defending NCAA champions USC.
UCLA, meanwhile, beat Loyola Marymount and Hawaii by a combined 9-1 score – both teams are receiving votes in the latest AVCA rankings.
That extends UCLA’s school-record winning streak to 19-straight in dual matches. Video highlights of the team’s day, as well as a wrapup, are available below:
In an East Bay rivalry game, St. Mary’s topped Cal 3-2 in a match between two vote-receiving, but unranked, opponents. The two are becoming familiar foes, having matched up 3 times this season. All 3 have been decided by 3-2 scores, with St. Mary’s having won the last 2.
Cal continues to rely heavily on its bottom-lines to keep them in games, including Wednesday where their wins came at #3 and #4. Cal’s team record, by line, this season:
- #1 line: 4-11
- #2 line: 4-11
- #3 line: 9-6
- #4 line: 12-3
- #5 line: 10-5
